Kansas City, MO observes a significant initiative for raising mental health awareness among young individuals. This initiative was led by the Children’s Mercy Hospital in collaboration with various mental health advocates. The local community gathered together at a Youth Mental Health Summit aiming to tackle the grave mental health issues among the youth of the city, which has drastically worsened due to the pandemic.
There is growing concern about the rapidly increasing suicide rates among African American children, a rate that is higher than those of white children, revealed Emily Snow, senior administrative director of behavioral health at Children’s Mercy KC. The community has been grappling with this expanding mental health crisis that is indiscriminately affecting adults, youngsters, and children alike.
In the past year, the Children’s Mercy Hospital encountered over 4,000 emergency room visits attributed exclusively to behavioral health issues. According to healthcare professionals, the most prominent barriers to mental health assistance include prevailing social stigma around mental health, scarcity of resources, and inadequate number of mental health providers. As Snow emphasized, a significant majority of Missouri and Kansas areas are now recognized as mental health professional shortage areas.
The pandemic-induced isolation coupled with overwhelming exposure to social media platforms have exacerbated depression and anxiety among children, according to experts. Distressingly, while more than 15 million American children are in need of mental health resources, merely 30-50% are actually accessing the help they require. The instances of depression and anxiety among today’s generation is astronomical and unlike anything confronted before, as per Snow.
Demonstrating the magnitude of this crisis, one mother named Susanne movingly shared the experience of her close encounter with the tragedy of almost losing her 15-year-old son. The conversation has brought to attention the vital lifeline that resources such as the emergency number 9-8-8 can offer to parents and children alike coping with such grave situations.
The summit also shed light on the Illuminate project initiated by Children’s Mercy last year, an investment of $275 million over five years dedicated to integrating mental health into primary care. This initiative is committed to early intervention, increasing specialized services, investing in research and expanding hospital care. Children’s Mercy is leading the charge in tackling the youth mental health crisis in Kansas City, setting an example for other cities and communities nationwide.
