Before we dive into the forecast, let’s clear up what actually counts as a “White Christmas.” According to the experts, it means having at least 1 inch of snow on the ground come Christmas morning. Sorry to burst your bubble, but a mere dusting or some flurries on the day itself just won’t cut it.

Looking back at history, Kansas City has had an interesting track record when it comes to Christmas snow. Over the past 30 years, we’ve enjoyed a snowy holiday in just 9 of those years. That gives us about a 30% historical chance of experiencing a white Christmas. Not too shabby, but it could be better!

If you’re dreaming of a snowy holiday, you might have better luck traveling north. For example, Northern Iowa boasts a whopping 60% probability for a snowy December 25th. Just something to keep in mind while you sip your hot cocoa!

The Current Forecast: What Do the Models Say?

Now, let’s check in on the latest models to see what they predict for our beloved Kansas City this year. A week and a half out, the forecasts can feel a bit like throwing darts blindfolded, but we’ve got to try.

First up is the American model, and it’s not looking too promising. It gives us a near-zero chance of seeing 1 inch of snow on Christmas Day. Only 3 out of 30 model members show even a glimmer of hope for a slight dusting on Christmas Eve. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack!

Then we have the European model, and unfortunately, it’s not much better. The odds for at least an inch of snow are sitting at around 10%. Similar to the American model, only about 6 out of 50 members hint at the possibility of a dusting just before Christmas. Both models suggest that we might stay below average when it comes to snowfall this December.

So, What Are the Chances?

Taking all of this into consideration, the outlook for Kansas City isn’t great for a snowy Christmas. If I had to put a number on it, I’d say there’s only about a 5% chance that we’ll wake up to that beautiful blanket of white on Christmas morning. That’s a stark contrast—six times lower than what we’d typically expect!
