In a stunning turn of events in Kansas City, former communications director Chris Hernandez has emerged victorious in a whistleblower lawsuit against the city, scoring a hefty total of $928,829 in damages. This victory comes on the heels of Hernandez’s allegations that he was pushed out of his position for standing up against unethical practices proposed by City Manager Brian Platt.
The drama began when Hernandez, who dedicated nearly a decade to his role, found himself in a precarious situation. He alleged that during his tenure, he opposed suggestions from Platt to deceive the media—a move Hernandez believed was not only unethical but could damage the city’s reputation. The tensions reportedly intensified during a meeting on January 3, 2022, when Platt raised the question of why city officials couldn’t just lie to the media. Hernandez, with integrity at the forefront, firmly opposed the idea.
This clash over honesty in communication ultimately led to Hernandez’s demotion. After being stripped of many responsibilities, he found himself in a job with much less authority, and crucially, no clear path for future advancement. The situation took a toll on Hernandez, who felt he had no option but to retire early at the age of 58.
Fast forward to the recent eight-day trial, which kicked off on a Monday, and we see a jury listening to testimonies from both current and former city officials, including the city’s mayor, Quinton Lucas. The jury ruled in favor of Hernandez, awarding him $228,828 specifically for his demotion and an additional $700,000 to compensate for emotional distress and the negative impact on his career.
Plaintiff’s claims highlighted instances of Hernandez challenging Platt’s directives, particularly during his tenure when he confronted the idea of erasing critical comments on social media—a move he viewed as fundamentally dishonest. Supporting Hernandez throughout the legal process were Erin Vernon and Lynne Bratcher from the Bratcher Gockel law firm, who presented a solid case demonstrating that Hernandez’s firing was directly linked to his defiance of Platt’s unethical requests.
Interestingly, amidst the whirlwind of testimonies, Mayor Lucas confirmed his support for Platt’s decision to replace Hernandez with an individual who better aligned with Platt’s vision. Despite this support, it was clear the jury found Hernandez’s commitment to ethical communication commendable—ultimately leading to a significant financial decision in favor of the former communications director.
