Calls for Action after Weekend Shooting in Midtown Raises Safety Concerns

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The wave of violence that is currently sweeping across Midtown-Westport continued over the weekend, sparking widespread concern and raising serious questions regarding security issues in the locality. Early Sunday morning saw yet another brutal shooting in the area, leaving one man dead and another severely injured.

The Spate of Violence

The deadly shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a local Walgreens on the north-east corner of 39th and Broadway Boulevard. As of now, the police have been unable to apprehend the culprits behind this heinous act.

Shockingly, this is not an isolated incidence. Just three weeks ago, a separate scene of violence unfolded down the same road. Five individuals were brutally shot, resulting in one fatality.

Local Reaction

In light of these events, local business owners have voiced their grievances, citing a deteriorating security climate that hamstrings their operations and threatens their livelihoods. Mark Dodd, president of Big Dude’s Music City, a store neighboring the crime scene, lamented the deteriorating state of safety in the area.

“It’s not tenantable for a business to be in this area really anymore because we have clients I have to walk them out to the parking lot, walk them in because they are being rushed upon. They are being aggressively solicited, threatened and so it’s not a good situation,” Dodd expressed.

Need for Enhanced Vigilance

Dodd called for an increased police presence in the area, citing frequent drug deals and suspicious activities that happen in plain sight with minimal intervention.

Authorities seem to acknowledge the growing concerns. Captain Jake Becchina addressed the city’s need for proactive law enforcement, urging for increased patrols and structured crime prevention plans.

“That’s our number one goal in every situation, is to intervene ahead of time. When people see the police, they want to know that something will happen if they act un-accordingly. We want that presence there and those officers there,” Becchina said.

Response from the Prosecutor’s Office

The prosecutor’s office insists it is doing everything in their power to deal with the present situation.

“We pursue vigorously every case brought to our office. We cannot file unsolved cases. And finger-pointing never solved a case,” a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office stated.

Room for Optimism

Despite the grim circumstances, Mark Dodd strikes a note of optimism.

“Unless you have a heart that you want to go fix it, it won’t make a difference. Ultimately, that’s what’s missing, and it starts at the top and then permeates down. Once you get that aligned, a lot of this will go away.”
