This November, The Gem Theater in Kansas City is getting ready for a very special production that’s sure to tug at your heartstrings. Titled “The Buffalo Hero of WWI: The Wayne Miner Story”, this play serves as a tribute to a remarkable young Black man from Kansas City who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I. Believe it or not, many folks here don’t even know who Wayne Miner was beyond the housing projects that bear his name!
Wayne Miner was the last American soldier killed in the Great War, but his story isn’t just about his tragic ending. It’s about courage, sacrifice, and perseverance in the face of adversity. As Mark Anthony Davis, a member of the Black Archives of Mid-America Board, pointed out, “A lot of people around Kansas City don’t have any idea of who Wayne Miner was; that’s the power of this play; it keeps Miner’s story from being lost to time.”
The play chronicles Miner’s journey from the streets of Kansas City to the battlefields of Europe. It highlights his experiences alongside thousands of other African-American soldiers who demonstrated unwavering bravery while enduring systemic discrimination from both the military and society at large. You can expect to see a deeply emotional portrayal of Miner’s relationship with his mother, whose spirit acts as his guiding light throughout his tumultuous journey.
Directed by the talented Kenthedo Robinson, a Park University graduate with over two decades of experience, this production promises to deliver a powerful narrative. Robinson, a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, has expertly crafted this story to resonate deeply with audiences.
On stage, the audience will see a stellar cast, with Alton Ray reprising the role of Private Wayne Miner. Joining him are other fine performers, including James Oliver as Franklin B. Seymoure, Sharell Williams as Anjelica, Nicholas Dodge as Captain Kenneth Quincy Blu, Shatique Brown as Private Rafius Rucker, and Christopher W. Clayton as Lieutenant Henry Nugent. Not to forget, Zsay Moore and Ms. D will grace the stage sharing the role of Mamma Miner, adding another layer of intimacy to this heartfelt tale.
