Vitamin String Quartet Set to Dazzle Kansas City with Classical Renditions of Popular Hits

Vitamin String Quartet Hits Kansas City with a Unique Blend

Kansas City, get ready for a musical experience like no other! The renowned Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ) is set to grace the stage at the beautifully designed Kauffman Center this Thursday, November 7. For those who aren’t familiar, VSQ transforms popular songs into mesmerizing classical arrangements, and they’ve been doing it for 25 years! With a massive fan base, more than a million copies sold, and music featured in hit shows like Bridgerton, Gossip Girl, and Westworld, they are ready to create some serious magic right here in Kansas City.

A 25-Year Musical Journey

Vitamin String Quartet is not your average string group; it’s a collaborative project that brings pop music to life through classical instrumentation. VSQ has released a wide variety of tracks, from Billie Eilish to rock classics, and the band’s interpretations feel both contemporary and timeless.

We had an engaging chat with Derek Stein, one of the talented cellists of VSQ, and James Curtiss, who works in A&R (Artists and Repertoire) at the group’s label, CMH Records. They filled us in on crafting live performances, selecting which songs to cover, and the intriguing responses from audiences. Talk about feeling the beat!

Behind the Scenes of VSQ

James explains how CMH Records has evolved over the years to create the incredible sound VSQ is known for. “We’ve focused a lot of time and energy into Vitamin String Quartet because it’s so engaging and interesting,” says James. It’s about crafting an experience that feels electric, almost like a rock show, yet maintains the elegance of traditional classical music. Derek adds, “It’s all about individual practice and collaborative rehearsals that bring our performance to life.”

Discovering Vitamin String Quartet

Derek’s journey to joining the group started in the late ’90s when he was drawn to the “The String Quartet Tribute to No Doubt” at a local record store. “That was my first encounter with VSQ. I was a huge fan,” he shared, laughing. Fast forward to 2008, a twist of fate during an audition changed everything for him. And here he is today, thriving as part of this dynamic ensemble!

Pop Culture Connections

The beloved quartet has gained a spot in pop culture, with their music being featured in major productions like Bridgerton. If you’re wondering how they manage to get into the limelight of TV shows, James reveals that many creative experts in the industry already know who they are. “We’ve never actively sought placements, but the connections have led to countless opportunities by sheer luck and mutual respect,” he shared enthusiastically.

What to Expect at the Show

This tour promises an exciting setlist, full of old favorites and fresh additions. James assured us that some songs will never leave the repertoire, like the iconic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and fan-favorite tracks from Bridgerton. Derek chimed in, “My personal favorite to perform is ‘Everlong’ by the Foo Fighters. It has so many layers and variations; it’s just a blast to play!”

A Meaningful Performance

As a Salina native, Derek has a special connection to the Kansas City area. “I’m thrilled to perform at the Kauffman Center! So many of my friends and family will be in the audience, and I can’t wait to show them what I’ve built over the years,” he excitedly mentioned. How touching is that?

Join the Musical Adventure

So, mark your calendars! This Thursday promises to be a night filled with intricate arrangements and a fantastic atmosphere. With a repertoire that bridges classical and contemporary and Derek’s heartfelt connection to the local audience, the Vitamin String Quartet is gearing up to offer an unforgettable performance. It’s going to be a night where classical music reigns with a modern twist, and you definitely don’t want to miss out!
