Hidden Gems of Kansas City: Urban Hikes KC Leads the Way
Kansas City might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about amazing hiking trails, but Lisa Peña has certainly set out to change that with her business, Urban Hikes KC. While the city’s reputation might suggest otherwise, Peña is uncovering the potential that lies within the streets and parks of KC, showing both locals and visitors that there’s more to explore than meets the eye.
A Love for Local History
Peña, a proud native of Kansas City, Kansas, recognized that the city is brimming with rich history and unbelievable art, just waiting to be discovered. “Kansas City has so much history and outdoor art, like sculptures and murals,” she says. “A lot of Kansas Citians don’t know the history of KC. I knew there was so much to be shared.” With that motivation in mind, she launched Urban Hikes KC in 2019.
Her path to becoming a tour guide isn’t your typical story. After completing her degree, she joined the Peace Corps and worked as a health volunteer in the Dominican Republic, where she organized women’s hikes to talk about health practices. This experience, coupled with her previous roles in education and community outreach, has helped Peña seamlessly step into the role of an engaging tour guide.
From Side Hustle to Full-Time Adventure
What began as a side gig has now blossomed into a full-time venture for Peña. She has expanded her team, now employing eight other hiking guides who share her passion for the city. Urban Hikes KC offers 18 different types of hikes across various neighborhoods, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Believe it or not, a whopping 80 percent of her hikers are locals!
These tours are designed to dive deep into Kansas City’s cultural pockets. Whether you’re into street art, local coffee, or even scrumptious tacos, there’s a tour tailored to your interests. Some tours focus on art galleries and sculptures, while others venture into the great outdoors to forage at places like Kaw Point Park. There’s even a unique tour that delves into the city’s infrastructure and transportation history. No matter the weather, these hikes continue year-round, with something new to experience in every season.
Something for Everyone
One of the most exciting offerings is the winter hike, which partners with the KC Streetcar. On this tour, hikers start by discovering the history of Hotel Kansas City, which once served as a men’s club laden with intriguing tales from Kansas City’s past. After sipping a cup of coffee at Made in KC’s café, participants will also explore the 21c Museum Hotel and The Savoy, known as the oldest restaurant in KC. Then, riders hop on the streetcar, making for a delightful day out.
When asked about her favorite hike, Peña finds it tough to pick a winner. She’s torn between the Strawberry Hill Urban Hike and the Crossroads’ West Side Urban Hike. “The observation park in the West Side has a really great view of the KC skyline,” she shares. “The majority of Kansas Citians have never been there before!”
A Perfect Day in KC
If you’re looking to enjoy a delightful day exploring the city, Peña has some recommendations. Start with a lovely breakfast at Seven Swans Crêperie—imagine lemon curd and blueberries in your crepe! Then, hire a bike from RideKC for a fun ride to the Freedom Trail in the West Bottoms, home to a peaceful sculpture park adorned with native plants.
No trip to Kansas City would be complete without tasting some mouthwatering birria tacos at Tarahumaras #2 in Strawberry Hill, paired with a rich consommé. And don’t forget to treat yourself afterward with artisanal ice cream at Hey Sugar, where the lavender honey flavor is an absolute must-try!
