Kansas City, Mo. – In an unsettling incident early Monday morning, two individuals were taken into custody after a robbery under a bridge left one man injured. Police officials responded to the scene near 18th and Prospect Avenue at approximately 7:30 a.m. following reports of the crime.
According to eyewitness accounts from the victim, he was simply minding his own business under the bridge when he was unexpectedly approached by Aidan Barber, a 25-year-old from Kansas City, and a woman later identified as Malinda Groves. Barber wasted no time, accusing the victim of stealing before turning the situation into a robbery, encouraging Groves to assist in the act.
In a nerve-wracking moment, Barber allegedly snatched the victim’s wallet, taking off with the contents, which included a staggering $200 in cash. Unfortunately, it didn’t end there. Reports indicate that during the robbery, Barber took it a step further and struck the victim with a crowbar, leaving him with injuries.
Once the police arrived on the scene, they began to investigate the situation. Their search took them back to the area where the robbery took place. It was there that they saw Barber and Groves walking in the nearby woods, not too far from where the incident unfolded. As law enforcement approached, the duo attempted to flee, sprinting through the parking lot of Kansas City Rubber and Belting Company and behind a nearby Family Dollar.
Despite their efforts to escape, officers successfully detained both suspects. During the detainment, authorities discovered that Barber had more than a gram of methamphetamine along with two glass pipes in his possession, raising additional legal concerns for the suspect.
Both Barber and Groves asserted their innocence in connection with the crime. Following their arrests, Barber was booked into the Jackson County Detention Center facing several charges, including robbery, armed criminal action, and possession of a controlled substance. He is currently being held on a hefty $100,000 cash bond.
Groves, on the other hand, faced her own set of issues as she was on probation due to a previous firearms violation, which ultimately led to her being jailed without a bond listed.
As the legal proceedings progress, both suspects will have their day in court soon. Barber’s bond review hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, followed by a preliminary hearing set for 2 p.m. on November 13. Meanwhile, Groves has a probation status hearing on the calendar for 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 17.
As the news develops, more information may be released. The swift actions of the Kansas City police have undoubtedly averted further potential harm in this case, and the community remains on alert as they await the legal outcomes. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available!
