The heart of Kansas City has been shaken as the community comes to terms with the tragic loss of 16-year-old Robert “Robbie” Duren. His family is devastated after finding out he was discovered dead following a house fire in the 5700 block of Bales Avenue late on September 6th. Kansas City, Missouri firefighters responded to the fire around 11:30 p.m., but their efforts turned into a grim discovery when they found Robbie’s body inside.
Initial investigations have categorized Duren’s death as suspicious, and an autopsy conducted by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office has since ruled it a homicide. Questions still swirl around the circumstances surrounding the fire and what ultimately led to Robbie’s passing, leaving everyone in the community with heavy hearts and many unanswered questions.
Laurie Clark, Robbie’s mother, spoke on the days leading up to this tragic event. She believed her son was spending the night at his cousin’s house after catching the Chiefs game. “He said that he was spending the night,” she recalled. “I wasn’t so worried at first because I knew he was with a cousin, or that was where he was supposed to be.” However, as hours stretched into days without a word from Robbie, worry began to creep in.
“It wasn’t normal for him to be gone more than one night away from home,” Clark said with a tone of despair. “So the second night, I figure, ‘Okay,’ when his phone was going to voicemail, ‘Okay, he’s with his cousin, so I guess he’s having fun.’” Unfortunately, what initially felt like familiar teenage behavior soon turned into their worst nightmare.
When Robbie’s phone remained silent longer than usual, the family filed a missing persons report and took to social media in search of any information. “He doesn’t let his phone die out; he liked to stay on his phone,” reflected Dr. Ruby Duren, Robbie’s grandmother. “It was dead for too long.”
The heartbreaking news arrived on Monday, completely shifting the landscape of their lives. “What really breaks my heart is that life has forever changed,” said Laurie Clark, struggling to contain her grief. “Not just for me, but for other families.”
As tragic as this has been, the Duren family insists on celebrating who Robbie was. Described as a “fly guy” by his grandmother, Robbie was known for always wanting to look his best—”he’s gonna come home, brush his teeth, wash his face, primp with his hair, and he’s gonna get dressed.”
His family fondly remembers his spirit, saying, “Robert was always a fun, loving child. He was just goofy, liked to have fun. He loved being around his family and a couple of close friends.” Even his nickname carried his personality. Although people often used “Robbie,” his family says he always preferred the “Robby” spelling, claiming it was “a guy’s spelling.”
The loss of their beloved Robbie has united the extended family, with Clark mentioning that “this is just a fraction” of the support they have received. “You couldn’t find a parking spot on the street,” she laughed lightly, reminiscing about their loud, lively family dynamics.
Now, however, a critical piece of joy has been removed from their lives. Robbie was the youngest of four children, and the reality of life without him weighs heavily on his family. “He was the baby,” Dr. Duren said, tears welling in her eyes. “And that’s hard to process.”
In their call for answers and justice, the Duren family highlights a crucial issue that they believe requires attention in their city: gun violence. “Something has to give, especially in Kansas City,” Dr. Duren emphasized. “Too much violence. Kids killing kids, teenage violence, it needs to stop somewhere.”
The family continues to seek support to cover funeral expenses and has established a GoFundMe page for contributions. As they navigate this painful chapter, they cling to the memories of Robbie while sharing a plea: “If you see something, say something.” It’s a heartfelt reminder that maintaining community vigilance could make a significant difference.
Robbie Duren may no longer be with them, but his spirit lives on in the memories shared by his loving family and friends. From laughter to fun times, the mark he has left will never fade—a smile to remind them always of the precious moments they had and will hold dear.
