One Seriously Injured in I-49 Collision Caused by Traffic Congestion
Collision Details
The serenity of a typical afternoon was shattered when a traffic congestion led to a multi-vehicle collision on the southbound I-49, just south of Kansas City. On Monday, July 1, emergency crews were dispatched around 1 p.m to the location adjacent to mile marker 164 following reports of a 3-vehicle crash.
According to the official report, a 2021 Ford F-150 operated by Matthew C. DeJong (53) from Olathe, was forced to slow due to the traffic buildup. This triggered a chain reaction with a 2014 Buick Encore driven by a 17-year-old male from Butler also having to reduce speed. A 2012 Toyota Prius steered by Kinsley J. Brannon (19) from Harrisonville, ended up hitting the slower-moving Buick’s rear end. As a result, the Buick rammed into the back of DeJong’s pickup.
Injury Reports
First responders confirmed that Michelle E. Riley (47), a passenger associated with the incident, had sustained serious injuries. She was promptly transferred to Cass County Regional Medical Center. Additionally, driver Brannon had minor injuries, although she declined medical attention at that time.
