Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as the story of an amazing historical figure, Tom Bass, is set to come back to life this September! For those who don’t know, Tom Bass was not just any horseman; he was a renowned trainer and rider who left a fantastic mark on the equestrian world from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. It’s a story that deserves to be told, and it’s finally getting the spotlight it richly deserves.
Born in 1859 near Columbia, Missouri, Tom Bass’s life began under the harsh conditions of slavery. Yet, instead of being defined by his past, he blossomed into one of the most recognizable figures in equestrian history. Bass wasn’t just a trainer; he was a man of remarkable talent, gentleness, and a unique understanding of horses. He pioneered a style of training that emphasized kindness, and his philosophy attracted famous clients, including governors and even presidents!
Just imagine the scene: Presidents like Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge among many others, marveling at his skills while he performed in prestigious events! Additionally, Bass was the first Black person to ride in New York’s Madison Square Garden, leaving audiences in awe. He even received an invitation from Queen Victoria herself to attend her diamond jubilee. What an incredible life!
Fast forward to today, and it’s almost shocking how Bass’s incredible story has slipped through the cracks of history. Michelle Tyrene Johnson, a native of Kansas City, Kansas, recently expressed her surprise upon learning about Bass when tasked with writing a play about him. “I was actually pretty upset to have not heard of him,” she admitted. “Isn’t that crazy? … And again, this is a man born into slavery.”
Johnson’s play, titled Horse Power: Tom Bass’ American Story, aims to revive this hidden gem of history. As a co-production between The Coterie Theatre and the American Royal horse show, this play will make its world premiere on September 11, 2024, right here in Kansas City!
The play is designed to offer a delightful blend of past and present, showcasing two parallel stories. One follows Bass’s incredible journey and his successes in the horse show circuit, while the other relates to a modern-day Black teenager learning about Bass’s life and facing contemporary issues surrounding race. By creating this dual narrative, Johnson hopes to shed light on how far we’ve come and the work that still lies ahead.
“The story tells of resilience, success, and the need for recognition in a world where often the winners are conveniently forgotten,” she explained, laughingly adding, “We have adorable puppet horses too! I hope they’re not stealing the scenes!”
Mark your calendars! Horse Power opens on September 11 with shows at 9:45 AM and 11:45 AM. The play will run through September 29, with multiple performances every week (except Mondays) and three shows on Fridays. The Coterie Theatre is located on Level One of Crown Center, ensuring accessibility for everyone.
Tickets are reasonably priced: $17 for adults and just $13 for kids under 18 and seniors over 60. And if parking’s a concern? No worries! There’s parking available in the Crown Center’s retail garage, and the box office provides validation for all-day free parking. Looking for a great outing with family or friends? This play comes highly recommended for ages 9 and up!
The story of Tom Bass is a spectacular tale of talent, determination, and recognition—a story that reminds us of our often-overlooked history. As Kansas City prepares to welcome Horse Power to the stage, it’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone to discover the legacy of one of its most celebrated figures. So grab your tickets and get ready to be enchanted by the life of Tom Bass!
