Spectacular Storms Sweep Through Kansas City, Setting Stage for a Sunny Weekend Ahead

Spectacular Storms Sweep Through Kansas City

Last night, Kansas City experienced quite the weather show! Showers and thunderstorms rolled through the metro area, treating residents to an astonishing lightning display. But that’s not all—rain poured down in a way that made it one of the heaviest rainfall days of the year!

Where Did the Rainfall Hit Hardest?

If you were in the Northland, you definitely got soaked the most. Reports from StormWatch.com reveal that the stretch along Missouri 152 at Upper Shoal Creek saw a whopping 1.73 inches of rain! That’s impressive, especially compared to other locations in the area. Meanwhile, folks in places like Johnson County and south of the Missouri River experienced a much lighter rainfall. Overall, Kansas City officially recorded 1.27 inches of rain on Thursday alone, a number that more than doubles the 1.08 inches the city saw over the last 34 days combined, according to the National Weather Service.

Recovering from the Deluge

This rain made yesterday the wettest day recorded since June 26, when the area saw 1.70 inches, and it even ranks as the seventh wettest day of 2024. Remarkably, the only day that beat it was April 18, when 1.79 inches drenched the city. With that kind of water falling from the sky, it’s no wonder everyone was glued to their windows watching the wild weather unfold!

Looking Ahead: A Bright and Sunny Weekend!

After the storm cleared out, the cold front moved on, and Kansas City is in for a treat this weekend! Temperatures will be approaching those lovely late-October norms, which typically hover around 63 degrees. The forecast is filled with promises of dry and sunny weather, so it sounds like a great time to get outdoors!

Friday’s temps are expected to linger between the lower 60s to near 70, while Saturday will cool slightly, sitting in the upper 50s to mid-60s. If you’re looking for the warmest day this weekend, mark your calendar for Sunday when the mercury rises into the 70s, making it a perfect day for a stroll in the park or perhaps a backyard BBQ!

What’s Next for Kansas City?

But hold on—while this weekend is set to be gorgeous, we’re already eyeing the week ahead. Monday and Tuesday could see temperatures climbing into the 80s before we once again peek at possible rain. Wednesday night might bring another chance of storms, with the forecast indicating a 40% to 50% chance of precipitation. Not to worry though, as no severe weather is expected just yet due to a lack of instability. However, the weather service did mention that if conditions change, we could see some strong storms where damaging winds might be the biggest concern.

All in all, it’s been quite a ride for Kansas City weather recently! From an electrifying storm last night to a bright weekend ahead, keep your umbrellas handy and enjoy the gorgeous fall days!
