Hey there, Kansas City! It’s that time of year again when the weather starts throwing some surprises our way. Brace yourselves because we’re following not one, but two major storm systems that could impact our area! So, let’s dive in and see what’s brewing in the skies.
Before we get into those cyclones, let’s take a moment to celebrate some recent rain. We’ve had a nice little boost, thanks to a recent downpour that gave us about 1.89 inches of rain here at Kansas City International Airport (KCI). This much-needed rainfall has helped reduce our yearly deficit to just under 5 inches below average. That’s pretty fantastic, considering November typically brings about two inches of rain! A shout-out to those areas south of KC that enjoyed a whopping up to 5 inches of rain!
Now, let’s chat about the two storm systems that are making headlines. The first one is a mid-latitude synoptic-scale cyclone – quite the fancy name, right? In simpler terms, it’s the next storm system heading our way. Currently, this system is settling in the Rockies, bringing heavy snow, and it’s on the move! By Friday, it’s expected to track eastward into the southwest Plains.
The second storm on our radar is more tropical in nature—let’s talk about Hurricane Rafael. This hurricane has quickly ramped up to a category 3 storm and is predicted to make landfall in western Cuba. With Cuba’s mountainous terrain, there might be some weakening as it passes through, but it’s likely to regain its strength as it moves back out over water. The good news is, as Rafael drifts into the Gulf of Mexico, it should begin to fizzle out due to cooler waters and some dry air. So, while we might see some pesky rip tides along the Gulf Coast, it seems we’re going to dodge a major bullet. Fingers crossed!
So, what does all this mean for our beloved Kansas City? Well, here’s the scoop! Right now, we’re looking at a dry spell today through Friday, with a bit of cloud cover thrown in. However, expect conditions to change as Friday afternoon rolls in with some rain and possibly thunderstorms as those systems start to converge.
As for rainfall amounts, predictions are currently at around 0.10 to 1 inch. But, be on alert for our friends in southwestern Kansas who could see 2 to 4 inches! To put that into perspective, that’s about a four-month average of rain hitting in a single storm!
But it’s not all doom and gloom! Get ready for a lovely weekend where Saturday afternoon is shaping up nicely with highs around 60 degrees. And for all you football fans, Sunday is looking even better, with plenty of sunshine, light breezes, and temperatures in the 60s just in time for the big game!
Before we wrap up, here’s a fun little reminder: our Snowflake Sweepstakes is still going strong! You have until 11:59 p.m. on November 10 to guess the first 1 inch of snow we’ll see this winter at KSHB 41. Spoiler alert: no snow is on the horizon for the next ten days.
Wrapping things up, it looks like we have an interesting weather week ahead. Let’s stay safe, enjoy the beautiful fall weather, and keep our fingers crossed for more rain to help us catch up on our totals!
Have a wonderful week and enjoy the weekend ahead!
