In a surprising turn of events, the Jackson County Family Court has dropped all charges against one of the two teens arrested in the tragic shooting death of beloved Brookside chef Shaun Brady. Brady, known for his popular Irish restaurant, Brady & Fox, was killed on August 28, shocking both his neighborhood and the wider Kansas City community.
The teen, identified only as L.M. due to juvenile privacy laws, had been held in custody for three months before the news broke that all charges against him were dismissed. L.M. was charged with second-degree murder, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, and armed criminal action. His defense attorney, Matthew Merryman, expressed relief at the decision, stating, “What I’m saying is they got the wrong kid.”
On Tuesday, Scott Lauck, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Family Court, confirmed that the charges against L.M. were indeed dropped, leaving many in the community puzzled and concerned about the handling of the case.
Brady’s death came just days before he was to participate in the annual Kansas City Irish Fest, an event that celebrates the city’s Irish heritage and culture. Local residents and family friends were devastated to learn of the tragedy that occurred when Brady confronted a group of teenagers trying to steal his car. Their argument escalated, and Brady was shot, with the entire incident caught on security cameras.
In the wake of Brady’s death, apprehension led to a swift arrest of L.M. and another teen, a 15-year-old named K.H., who remains charged and will face a hearing in December to determine if he will be tried as an adult.
Merryman, representing L.M., pointed out the unfortunate implications of the case, particularly in light of the public’s outrage. “This case generated a ton of local and international attention and when the public outrage is so high, there is a rush to find someone and hold them accountable.” He highlighted the unfortunate reality that L.M. was a victim of circumstances, stating, “There was a rush to judgment and L.M. was just the first Black kid they found to pin that judgment on.”
After spending months in custody, L.M. is now at home, though his attorney mentioned that the experience has been incredibly taxing for him and his family. “This kid was trying to graduate from high school and loves to play baseball.” Merryman noted that the ordeal impacted L.M.’s education, sports, and job opportunities, as he missed out on critical moments in his young life.
Although justice seems to have prevailed for L.M. with the dismissal of charges, questions remain unanswered. Police authorities have classified the shooting as an ongoing investigation and declined to comment on the evidence that led to L.M.’s arrest.
While L.M. is relieved to be home, Merryman has refrained from discussing whether L.M.’s family may pursue any further legal action related to his wrongful arrest. The attorney said, “We’re all just trying to piece together what the future looks like for our client.” For now, the community remains reeling from the loss of Shaun Brady and the tangled web of events that followed.
The case serves as an important reminder of the complexities of the justice system, especially when youth are involved. With the investigation still open, many in Kansas City will be closely watching to see how this story continues to unfold.
