The cozy atmosphere and delicious food of Salty Iguana, a cherished Kansas City restaurant.
The beloved Salty Iguana Mexican restaurant, a staple in Kansas City for over three decades, has permanently closed all its locations due to financial difficulties. The chain cited unpaid taxes and a challenging economic climate as key reasons for their decision. Customers expressed their heartbreak on social media, reminiscing about cherished meals and memories. Salty Iguana’s closure marks the end of an era for the local food scene, with the establishment renowned for its signature dishes and vibrant atmosphere.
In a heart-wrenching announcement that’s sure to leave a sour taste in the mouths of many, the beloved Salty Iguana Mexican restaurant chain has decided to permanently close all of its locations in and around Kansas City. This closure comes after over three decades of delighting the palates of locals and visitors alike with their famous margaritas, quesadillas, and fajitas!
According to their social media announcement, the restaurant chain expressed its deep sadness regarding this decision, acknowledging that it was a tough call for all involved. The final curtain fell for the Independence location on a recent Tuesday, and residents of Prairie Village and Lawrence also learned their doors would not reopen.
The Prairie Village restaurant, stationed at 8228 Mission Road, was seized by the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) for a staggering total of $102,160.24 in unpaid sales and liquor taxes. Not to be outdone, the Lawrence branch was also seized, with a tax bill of $103,204.96 looming over it.
It’s been a tough couple of years for the restaurant, with financial strains becoming increasingly more prominent. After the seizure of the Prairie Village location, Salty Iguana had reached out for assistance, hiring a tax attorney in hopes of resolving its financial woes. They were also in limbo, awaiting an Employee Retention Credit Refund from the IRS for an impressive two years, which undoubtedly played a significant part in their challenges.
Salty Iguana first opened its doors in 1992, quickly establishing itself as a community staple. The establishment became renowned for its mouthwatering Mexican fare and warm, friendly atmosphere. Over the years, it earned various accolades, including the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Nacho, creating a lasting imprint in local hearts and appetites.
In recent years, the chain already faced some tough decisions, shuttering its Olathe location in 2024 and the Overland Park location two years prior in 2019. This latest decision, however, marks the complete end of an era for the Kansas City food scene.
In their farewell, Salty Iguana expressed nothing but gratitude towards its loyal customers and dedicated staff, acknowledging how much they cherished being a part of the Kansas City and Lawrence communities. Truly, the connections made over sizzling fajitas and refreshing drinks will be fondly remembered.
As this beloved establishment takes its final bow, it poses a poignant reminder of the challenges that small businesses face, especially in today’s economic climate. The Salty Iguana legacy may be closing its doors, but it will forever hold a cherished spot in the culinary history of Kansas City.
