Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a significant development for reproductive health, two Planned Parenthood clinics in Missouri, including one in Columbia, are set to resume surgical abortions following a recent legal ruling. This decision reverses previous restrictions, allowing clinics to offer essential services. The ruling, made by Judge Jerri Zhang, deemed certain regulations unnecessary and discriminatory. While surgical procedures are resuming, the clinics are also preparing to offer medication abortions pending state approval. Despite new opportunities, uncertainty remains regarding demand and potential legal challenges ahead.
Exciting developments are on the horizon for abortion access in Missouri, as two Planned Parenthood clinics in the state are gearing up to resume surgical abortions next week. This news comes on the heels of a significant legal ruling that has made it possible for these vital services to be offered once again.
The first elective abortion since Missouri’s restrictive ban was lifted happened earlier this month at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Kansas City. Now, the clinic in Columbia, which has not been performing surgical abortions since 2018, is set to kick off its scheduled surgical procedures, with the first appointment slated for Monday.
This positive shift is largely thanks to a recent decision by Jackson County Judge Jerri Zhang, who struck down certain regulations that were previously imposed on Missouri abortion providers. Labeling these regulations as “unnecessary” and “discriminatory,” the ruling highlighted the need for fair access to abortion services, as recognized by Amendment 3, a constitutional amendment passed by voters last November.
One particularly contentious regulation that has been blocked required abortion clinics to submit a complicated plan for medication abortions. While Planned Parenthood has submitted a new plan, they are still awaiting approval from the state before they can start offering medication abortions. At this moment, the clinics are on standby, eagerly waiting for the green light.
Interestingly, in the U.S. in 2023, medication-based abortions accounted for 63% of all abortion procedures, surpassing surgical options. Planned Parenthood clinics in Columbia and Kansas City are currently well-stocked with abortion medication and ready to spring into action as soon as state approval rolls in.
For now, both the Columbia and Kansas City clinics will offer surgical abortions at least once a week, with plans to expand availability as they adjust their scheduling and staffing. The Kansas City clinic performed its first elective abortion in nearly three years on February 15, managed by a team of five physicians based in the area, with a push to hire even more staff.
Due to previous state restrictions, surgical abortion equipment had been circulating between Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Now, with the resumption of services, there’s a sense of urgency as clinics prepare their facilities for upcoming appointments.
While the resumption of surgical abortions is a significant step forward, there is still uncertainty regarding demand. Potential patients may be traveling from neighboring states, which adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Plus, the St. Louis clinic, the last facility in Missouri to provide abortions before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, has not yet scheduled appointments due to ongoing legal issues.
In sum, as of next week, two of Missouri’s Planned Parenthood clinics in Columbia and Kansas City are preparing to offer surgical abortions, marking a shift in the state’s stance on reproductive health. While there are still hurdles to overcome, this development brings hope and new opportunities for those seeking care in Missouri.
