Ah, Kansas City! This late October has unfolded in quite an unexpected way, and if you’ve stepped outside this morning, you’ve likely felt the surprise. The winds have been blowing and going all night, keeping our city unusually warm. Can you believe it? We started our day with temperatures lingering in the lower 70s, dramatically higher than the average low of around 41°F! That’s a stunning difference of about 30°F above average!
As the sun rose, our daytime warmth continued to break records. We officially tied the record for the warmest low temperature on this date, a record that dates back to 1946! Just yesterday, nationwide, there were nearly 120 record highs reported, and right here in Kansas City, we matched our record high of 84°F despite the thick clouds hanging around. Fast forward to this morning, though — those clouds have made a bit of an exit, but don’t worry; they’re forecasted to make a return later today.
So, what can we expect for the rest of the day? Hold onto your hats, everyone, because it’s going to be very windy with gusts reaching from 40 to even 50 MPH! Temperatures will likely peak in the lower to mid 80s, remaining about 20° above average for this time of year. If you have plans to step outside or take a stroll, just be prepared for those leaves to be swirling around!
As we gear up for Halloween, tomorrow looks to be a bit of a different story. A cold front is making its way toward us, scheduled to kick in by tomorrow evening. Ahead of this front, we can expect some rain and possibly a bit of thunder. There’s a slight chance of severe weather too. So, if you’re planning to head out for trick-or-treating, be aware: the expected storms could bring gusty winds and the risk of some hail.
The storms are predicted to move from southwest to northeast, affecting the area from the afternoon onwards, with the most significant threats arriving early in the evening. Winds could reach up to 60+ MPH in some spots, so keep an eye on the weather updates!
Mark your calendars for an interesting Halloween, forecasted to start with a sunny and breezy morning and taper off to lighter winds in the afternoon. However, temperatures will take a noticeable dip into the upper 50s, marking a stark contrast to our warm October days.
Now, while we’re enjoying this warm spell, have you noticed the shifts in our landscape? Just a couple of months ago, the terrain was a vibrant green, whereas it’s now showcasing those beautiful fall colors. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be all great news for our trees. Those strong winds are certainly taking a toll, knocking off leaves left and right.
Speaking of dryness, October this year has had its fair share of challenges. With only a couple of days left in the month, many areas are experiencing one of the driest October records yet. However, good news may be on the horizon! Forecasts suggest we could be looking at much-needed rain over the coming weeks, possibly exceeding 4 inches in some places, which could really help out our local environment.
So, Kansas City, today is quite the weather spectacle, with the warmth, winds, and pending storms. Be vigilant and stay updated on the weather forecasts as we prepare for a changing season, and while you’re at it, enjoy the remainder of this unseasonably warm October—those crisp, fall days are just around the corner!
