As the leaves change colors and Halloween decorations start to come down, a remarkable pumpkin display in Overland Park, Kansas is turning heads and spreading smiles. If you haven’t seen this yet, you’re in for a treat!
What began with just two simple pumpkins 14 years ago has blossomed into a full-blown obsession with over 300 intricately carved foam pumpkins lining the yard of the Taber family home. Daniel Taber, who recently made the move from sunny California to the heartland of Kansas, recalls the beginning of this delightful journey.
Daniel’s passion for pumpkin carving sprouted when his son was born. “The first year we carved a few and then before we knew it, we were carving a few more every year,” he shared with a chuckle. The Taber family fully embraced their newfound reputation, eagerly accepting the informal title of the “Pumpkin House.
“You know, you either lean into it or you don’t,” Daniel said. Lean in they did, with the humble beginnings of two pumpkins now transformed into what many neighbors call a must-see spectacle.
What makes this pumpkin display even more special is how it brings the community together. While residing in California, the Tabers started collecting donations from visitors stopping by to admire their handiwork. “We thought it would be nice to raise funds for our local food banks,” Daniel explained.
This year in Kansas, the family raised an impressive $700 for Harvesters, an organization dedicated to fighting hunger. “It’s a great way to meet our new neighbors,” Daniel said, smiling as he reflected on how the event had allowed him to connect with the community. “We ended up meeting almost everyone on our street during that first weekend,” he added, underscoring the joy and camaraderie sparked by the pumpkin display.
The Tabers’ pumpkin creations are not just random shapes. They’ve carved beloved characters that resonate with their little visitors. From Paw Patrol to Mickey Mouse, the kids are drawn to these familiar faces each autumn. Teenagers also find joy in the artistic renditions of pop culture icons, with this year’s standouts featuring Taylor Swift carved into foam.
But with over 300 pumpkins on display, it can be tough for Daniel to choose a favorite. “It’s almost like picking your favorite kid,” he remarked. Each pumpkin holds its own charm and unique story, making it tough to narrow it down to just one.
So, if you’re in Overland Park, mark your calendar! The pumpkin house is located at the corner of 124th Terrace and Nieman. Feel free to swing by to admire the joy these pumpkins bring, and while you’re there, consider making a donation to Harvesters to continue the cycle of kindness.
Additionally, you can share your thoughts on what pumpkin theme the Tabers should try next year! It’s a wonderful way to not only enjoy this seasonal spectacle but also to contribute to the community spirit that the Tabers have worked so hard to cultivate.
