Kansas City Stands Together for Public Safety
Kansas City, Mo. – Residents and officials alike are coming together in an effort to reduce violence and improve safety in the heart of the city. On October 10, a new coalition called KC United for Public Safety held a news conference aimed at tackling the pressing issue of crime, particularly focusing on the troubling increase in homicides.
This gathering took place just one day after a disturbing shooting incident in Westport, where five individuals, including a teenage victim, suffered gunshot wounds. As of Friday afternoon, it was reported that all five victims remained hospitalized, raising serious concerns about the state of safety in the area.
During the news conference, the urgency of the situation was voiced by many, including Gilded Chaos Vintage Owner, Lindsey Kupper, who remarked, “I don’t have an answer, but somebody needs to figure this out because this is out of control.” It’s a sentiment shared by many Kansas City residents who are weary of ongoing violence.
The Ambitious Plan
The coalition’s ambitious goal? To bring the annual homicide count in Kansas City back to under 100. Additionally, they are aiming to cut gun violence by a staggering 50% within the next five years. The coalition includes a diverse mix of stakeholders, such as the city government, the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, and the non-profit organization KC Common Good.
Klassie Alcine, CEO of KC Common Good, expressed a sense of hope in collective efforts, saying, “Sometimes it does feel like the days look long, but I’ll tell you, it takes this collective effort and us being on the same page consistently communicating.” Alcine believes that while the task will be challenging, it is indeed feasible to diminish violence in the city.
Understanding the Impact
But why does this matter so much? The statistics reveal a stark reality. Marijana Kotlaja, an Assistant Professor at UMKC, provided insights into the economic blow of each homicide. She stated that nationwide, a single homicide can cost communities millions of dollars, affecting not just direct expenses but also the broader economic landscape.
“Our estimates are from like five to 80%,” Kotlaja noted, indicating the significant job loss that can follow a homicide within the community. She also pointed out that each homicide tends to lead to two fewer retail or service businesses in the immediate area, showcasing the direct link between violence and community economic health.
Collaborative Efforts with Law Enforcement
KCPD Chief Stacey Graves emphasized that the police department is proactively addressing crime concerns by collaborating with local business owners. She shared information about community crime meetings hosted at each patrol division station, providing a platform for sharing crime data and discussing local issues.
“We also have Community Interaction Officers at all six patrol division stations that business owners can talk to about crime,” added Chief Graves. This initiative shows a commitment from the KCPD to engage with the community directly, ensuring that their safety needs are being addressed.
