Kansas City’s Pride Haven Receives $400,000 in Funding but Still Needs $300,000 to Reopen for LGBTQ+ Youth

Kansas City’s Pride Haven Gets Vital Funding but Needs More to Reopen

Kansas City is buzzing with news that brings a glimmer of hope for our LGBTQ+ youth. On Thursday, Pride Haven, the city’s only emergency overnight shelter catering specifically to LGBTQ+ youth, received a hefty $400,000 in funding that was earmarked back in 2022. This generous amount, championed by a Missouri representative, plays a critical role in lifting some of the financial burdens from the shelter. But the reality is that it still falls short of what’s needed to throw open the doors to welcome its residents back.

What’s the Catch?

Patrick McLaughlin, the CEO of Pride Haven, was quite candid about the situation, stating, “This evens us out. This basically gets our head to the surface of the water, with all of that accounts payable.” It’s a lifeline that allows the shelter to pay back loans from the bank and cover outstanding costs from previous maintenance work, but it’s just not enough to get operations back on track. As winter looms just around the corner, the urgency is undeniably growing.

For those who might not be familiar, Pride Haven has been serving as a safe haven for queer youth aged 18 to 24, offering not just a warm bed and meals, but also critical housing resources. Since opening its doors at 3109 Campbell Street in 2020, the shelter has made a remarkable impact in the community—providing nearly 150 LGBTQ+ youth with some form of housing during the 2022 fiscal year alone!

Why was Funding Needed?

The road to stability has been rocky. Initially, Pride Haven flourished thanks to COVID relief funds and a three-year grant from the Hall Foundation. However, when funding dried up, the shelter had no choice but to close its doors in early October. That closure came as a slap in the face to many who rely on its services, especially as freezing temperatures approach.

According to McLaughlin, the spotlight is now on raising an additional $300,000—an amount that is essential if Pride Haven hopes to reopen for at least six months, providing warmth and safety to its vulnerable clients. The pressure is real, and community leaders are already brainstorming creative fundraising events to reclaim some of the lost ground.

How Can You Help?

If you’re inspired to make a difference, the good news is that there are opportunities to contribute! Pride Haven is actively applying for more grants and organizing fundraising events. Every little bit counts, and your support could mean the world to a young person in need!

For those interested in lending a helping hand, you can find details about donations and upcoming events on Pride Haven’s website and social media pages. Spreading the word is just as important as donating—so feel free to share this information within your networks. Together, we can rekindle hope for those who feel abandoned.

The Bottom Line

This funding from 2022 is a step in the right direction and it really brings Pride Haven back to the surface, but more support is definitely crucial to ensure these young individuals have a safe place to land during such a challenging time. As the cold creeps in, let’s make sure Kansas City shows up for its most vulnerable members. After all, no one deserves to face harsh winters alone.
