Prairie Village, Kansas, has found itself in the midst of a string of package thefts, and residents are understandably feeling a bit uneasy. Over the past two months, police have been alerted to several incidents of what locals are calling porch piracy. It’s a term that has become all too familiar as online shopping continues to soar and thieves become bolder.
Just recently, a Prairie Village neighbor, living near 95th and Roe, had a front-row seat to such an incident, and she caught it all on her security camera. The neighbor, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her disbelief at the sight of someone wearing an Amazon vest walking up to her porch with the intent to steal.
On October 9 at approximately 11:30 a.m., the homeowner reported that a thief parked directly in front of her driveway and proceeded to make a quick stop on the street. The video showed that the package was delivered just ten minutes prior by a FedEx driver. In a matter of seconds, the thief snatched the package and hopped into the passenger side of a white sedan, driving away without a care in the world.
“Stuff like that doesn’t happen around here. So, it was pretty shocking,” said the neighbor, who expressed her concern for all the important items that could be lost to such thefts. “What if it’s somebody’s medication? And they don’t even know what they’re taking, just stop.”
The homeowner expressed her frustration and sadness about the situation, particularly for her 11-year-old son, who had worked diligently to save up for a smartwatch. With multiple lemonade stands and doing chores around the house, the boy put in his effort, only to find his hard work taken away in an instant.
“He ran up to his room and started crying,” she shared. “It’s not just about getting a new one; it’s the principle. He worked so hard for that.”
Prairie Village Police Captain, Ivan Washington, is taking these incidents seriously. He urges homeowners to consider alternative options for securing their packages. “Some people install drop boxes next to their house with a lock and key,” Washington explained. He also suggested that deliveries can be made to workplaces if residents will be away from home during the day.
Washington noted that similar thefts have occurred in the area, with the earlier incident reported last September near Nall and 65th Terrace. The police are actively investigating these events, sifting through tips and leads as they work to identify the suspects involved.
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with additional information regarding these thefts to come forward. If you have seen anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Prairie Village Police at (913) 642-6868.
Despite the unfortunate events, residents like the Moreland family are looking forward to a brighter outcome. They have already ordered a replacement watch and filed a claim with AT&T. However, the incident has indeed raised an alarm for countless others in the neighborhood about the importance of protecting their deliveries.
As Prairie Village navigates through this troubling wave of package thefts, ongoing public awareness and vigilance may just be the best defense against these so-called porch pirates. So, the next time your package arrives, make sure you’re keeping a lookout—it’s a small step to ensure your hard work doesn’t go to waste. Stay safe, everyone!
