In a tragic turn of events, a pedestrian was killed on the I-435 earlier this week. The victim has since been identified by police as Thomas L. Gibson, a 62-year-old man.
On Tuesday, the authorities were alerted to a pedestrian-vehicle crash near the area of northbound I-435 and Winner Rd., in the vicinity of North Blue Ridge. On arrival at the scene, officers found evidence that the victim, Gibson, had attempted to cross the northbound lanes of the highway, only to be struck by a silver GMC Yukon Denali in the first lane.
The first responders on the scene confirmed that Gibson was pronounced deceased upon their arrival. According to reports, the driver of the Denali, who remained unhurt, had pulled over immediately after the incident.
In response to the fatal collision, all lanes of the highway were temporarily closed to traffic at Truman Rd. The closure facilitated the clearing of the scene and ongoing investigations and lasted approximately three hours.
Further details surrounding the incident and how Gibson ended up on the highway remain unclear. Despite various speculative theories, the relevant authorities have yet to release additional information surrounding the circumstances of the tragic event.
As announced by the city’s police department, this is the 34th traffic fatality to be recorded in 2024, reflecting a worrying upward trend from the 20 incidents that were recorded in the same period in 2023.
This tragic incident serves as a stern reminder about the importance of road safety for both pedestrians and drivers. As the concerned authorities continue with their investigations, local communities in Kansas City come together to mourn the unfortunate loss of one of their own.
