Oversize Load Truck Strikes Overhead Sign, Causes Traffic Disruption on I-435 in Kansas City, Kansas

Overhead Sign Damaged by Oversize Load, Halts Traffic on I-435 in KCK

Kansas City, MO – All southbound traffic was halted on interstate 435 in Kansas City, Kansas due to a freak accident involving a truck carrying an oversize load. The truck is reported to have hit an overhead sign at the Leavenworth Rd. exit on southbound I-435 around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, causing significant damage and leading to the shutdown of the busy motorway.

Oversize Load Truck Collision with Overhead Sign

The Kansas Highway Patrol(KHP) reported that it was informed about a truck with an oversized load colliding with the overhead sign at the Leavenworth Rd. exit on the motorway around midday. The incident caused the sign to be damaged, which prompted the authorities to temporarily halt all southbound traffic around 2:30 p.m. the same day.

Highway Closure for Sign Removal

The Kansas Department of Transportation reported that due to the damage, the overhead sign truss required removal. As a result, all southbound lanes of I-435 at Leavenworth Rd. were completely closed to traffic. This closure was expected to continue into the later hours of the day, causing a significant disruption to the usual flow of traffic.

Traffic Diversion and Sign Removal

The KHP diverted the traffic through the exit while the damaged sign was removed. The redirected traffic flow had vehicles move through the intersection and then return to southbound I-435. This measure was taken to ensure the safety of motorists and the removal crew during the operation.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with oversized loads on highways. This situation not only affected the traffic but also highlighted the importance of proper management of oversized loads on the highway to avoid such incidents in the future.
