Gus, a handsome Belgian Malinois born in the Netherlands, touched the lives of many during his time with the department.

The Journey of a True Hero

Gus joined the ranks of the Overland Park Police Department’s K9 unit in March 2014 and quickly made a name for himself as a formidable partner in the fight against crime. He dedicated five years of his life to the job, retiring in April 2019 when he was just seven years old.

During his tenure, Gus worked closely alongside his handler, Officer Doherty, tackling various duties that included searching for and apprehending suspects, as well as sniffing out dangerous narcotics. His skills were top-notch, and throughout his career, Gus was deployed an impressive 972 times. In those instances, he played a crucial role in finding or apprehending a total of 21 suspects, making a significant impact on public safety in Overland Park.

A Loyal Companion After Retirement

After hanging up his leash, Gus didn’t stray far from the spotlight. He enjoyed a well-deserved retirement, living out his golden years with Officer Doherty and his loving family. Unfortunately, Gus passed away on November 29, 2024, leaving a void in the hearts of those who served with him and those who benefitted from his dedicated service. The Overland Park Police Department expressed their sorrow, stating, “We honor his loyal service and extend our heartfelt condolences to Officer Doherty and his family.” This statement speaks volumes about the esteem in which Gus was held, not just as a four-legged officer but as a valued member of the police force.
