Kansas City Introduces Grant Program to Boost Outdoor Dining for Local Restaurants

Kansas City Boosts Outdoor Dining with New Grant Program!

Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as the city officials recently announced the recipients of a stunning pilot program aimed at giving local restaurants a boost. With a generous funding pool of $200,000, this initiative is set to help eateries upgrade and expand their outdoor seating options. As we continue navigating through the evolving restaurant landscape, it’s great to see our city stepping up to support local businesses!

A Heartfelt Message from the Mayor

Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed his enthusiasm about the program. “Each of the Outdoor Dining Enhancement Grant Program recipients have exceptional plans to build or enhance their outdoor dining spaces,” he stated. His collaboration with 2nd District Councilman Wes Rogers reflects a deep commitment to nurturing our vibrant restaurant scene. Lucas hopes these grants will not only enhance local dining experiences but also prepare Kansas City for the global spotlight when we host the 2026 World Cup!

An Impressive Response

What’s even more impressive is the overwhelming response to this program! Over 120 applications were submitted, showcasing the creativity and ambition of our local restaurateurs. A total of 20 lucky recipients were selected to receive funding ranging from $8,000 to $15,000 each. This funding is pulled from the city’s 2024-25 tourism budget, ensuring that these investments not only help restaurants but also contribute to Kansas City’s lively tourism industry.

Who Are the Lucky Recipients?

Among the chosen few are some beloved local spots, including:

  • Cupini’s

What’s in Store for the Recipients?

For instance, Alan Kneeland, the owner of The Combine, has big plans! He intends to upgrade the rooftop space and even explore outdoor seating along Troost Avenue. “We’ll also need additional licensing and permits for that, so we may use some of the funds toward those costs,” Kneeland shared.

Kerry Browne from Browne’s Irish Marketplace is equally ecstatic. She plans to invest in lighting, seating, restroom access, and heaters to make their outdoor areas more welcoming. “During COVID, we started utilizing a space behind the store where we had musicians playing outside,” she explained. “This will let us tweak that space in a way where we can host more weddings and private events year-round. We feel very fortunate to get it,” Browne added. “It’s nice when you’re a small business and you feel like the city is behind you.”

The city officials are looking towards the future with optimism. They previously mentioned hopes to extend the program beyond 2024 and potentially accept applications year-round!
