Sponsor Our ArticlesOn the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has closed its last Kansas City location after 25 years. The Overland Park spot marked the end of an era for food lovers. Despite the closure, new retailers like Aur Society and Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream are set to open at Oak Park Mall, bringing fresh dining options to the area. Additionally, the former Lee’s Summit location will soon be transformed into El Toro Loco, promising a vibrant Mexican dining experience.
In a bittersweet turn of events for food lovers, On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has officially closed its last location in the Kansas City area after a commendable 25 years of serving up delicious tacos, enchiladas, and that oh-so-tempting margarita. The Overland Park spot, located at 11855 W. 95th St., marked the end of an era when it shut its doors in late February, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the nearby mall.
It’s hard to believe that the Overland Park location, which came to life by replacing a local favorite, Annie’s Santa Fe, has been dishing out Tex-Mex delights for a quarter of a century. This beloved eatery opened its doors back in the mid-90s, joining the Kansas City dining scene when On the Border made its debut in the area with a location in the bustling Country Club Plaza.
However, the past year has not been as friendly for the chain as it has seen closures across the region, including its locations in Northland, Independence, and Lee’s Summit. There was a time when the restaurant was a thriving gathering place for families and friends. But as the tide changed, so did On the Border’s presence in the area, with the Overland Park location being the last one standing.
While On the Border may be packing up its sombreros, the Oak Park Mall is not losing its momentum. Up-and-coming retailers are eager to fill the space. Soon, shoppers will be able to browse the latest styles at Aur Society, a new women’s clothing brand that’s preparing to take Root. Though the specific opening date is still under wraps, excitement is already brewing among fashion enthusiasts.
Additionally, those with a sweet tooth can look forward to the opening of Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, which will be setting up shop just a stone’s throw away at 11885 W. 95th St.. Nestled next to popular spots like Cava and Bibibop, this ice cream haven promises to be a delightful addition to the shopping experience at Oak Park Mall.
In another twist of food fate, the Lee’s Summit location of On the Border has been closed for quite some time, but it’s not the last we’ll hear from that spot. Plans are in motion to transform it into El Toro Loco, a vibrant new eatery set to introduce a range of Mexican dishes. Although an official opening date has yet to be confirmed, anticipation is already bubbling, especially considering El Toro Loco has already made a name for itself with successful locations at Legends Outlets Kansas City and in Lenexa.
It’s a nostalgic moment for many who have experienced the lively atmosphere and savory meals at On the Border. For a long time, it was not just a place to eat; it was where friends gathered for celebrations and families bonded over shared meals. The closure indeed marks the end of a chapter in Kansas City’s culinary tale, but as the old saying goes, when one door closes, another opens. With fresh dining options on the horizon, who knows what delicious experiences await just around the corner?
While On the Border may have waved goodbye, its Tex-Mex legacy will surely linger in the hearts (and stomachs) of many.
