Exciting New Eatery Takes Flight in Kansas City’s City Market
Kansas City is on the brink of something delicious with the upcoming Murmuration Eatery & Cocktail Bar set to open its doors this January. Nestled right next to the bustling City Market Coffee Roasters, this new spot promises to offer a unique culinary experience that perfectly blends food and community vibes. And trust us, you won’t want to miss it!
A Happy Accident of Design
Let’s start with a fun little fact: the marbled teal and salmon floor you’ll find in Murmuration was discovered completely by accident! Owner Nikole Ammer stumbled upon this stunning pattern while peeling back layer after layer of paint left by previous businesses. It took Ammer a whopping 36 hours with an angle grinder to reveal the beauty beneath without damaging it. Talk about dedication!
Ammer beautifully describes this discovery as a metaphor for the project as a whole. “It’s all about collaboration and community,” she reflects, drawing inspiration from the name “murmuration,” which refers to the breathtaking formations starlings create in flight. “It’s about working together without a leader for the common goal of safety.” While starlings might be an invasive species in many areas, the murals in Murmuration will showcase an array of native Missouri birds, giving this eatery a local touch.
Pancakes, Cocktails, and Everything in Between
The menu is where Murmuration really takes off (pun intended)! Ammer’s love for breakfast food shines through with some delicious offerings. You can expect elevated takes on classic breakfast burritos and sandwiches, but that’s just the beginning! Get ready to try The Pile, an open-faced sandwich stacked high with meats, greens, tater tots, and fries, topped with a perfectly cooked over-medium egg. Yum!
If you’re in the mood for something snacky, their “walking food” options will include tornado fries and mini waffles. And for those who want a sit-down meal, there will be hearty options like reubens and salads. Here’s the kicker—while Murmuration takes charge of the food scene, City Market Coffee will pivot to focus more on drinks. From house-roasted brews to a full bar, including what Ammer hopes will be the city’s best espresso martini, the beverage game is about to get stronger!
Convenience and Community
What’s even cooler? Murmuration and City Market Coffee will share a register, pickup window, and seating area. This means you can enjoy the best of both worlds without having to move from your cozy spot. Want a coffee and a delicious breakfast burrito? Go right ahead! You can order from both menus simultaneously.
Ammer is also excited about the new operating hours, opening at 6:30 a.m. and staying open until 8 p.m., creating even more chances for the community to connect. She envisions hosting summer events such as live music and collaborations with local businesses to create a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates the diversity of City Market.
Facing Challenges Head-On
As one of the oldest businesses in City Market, Ammer has witnessed numerous changes. Several neighbors have come and gone, whether due to space issues or pandemic struggles, but she remains hopeful about the future. The extensive renovations aim to give both businesses a strong sense of individuality while remaining interconnected.
Murmuration is expected to officially launch in January to give the team some breathing room before the bustling summer months when City Market can draw in as many as 6,000 visitors in a single day. Expect to see the business thriving, and the community flocking to this new communal hub!
So mark your calendars, food lovers of Kansas City! Murmuration Eatery and Cocktail Bar will be located right next door to City Market Coffee at 305 Main St, ready to serve up all your brunch and cocktail dreams. Your taste buds are in for a treat!
