Empowered Advocacy Training

Exciting News from Jefferson City! New Free Training for Individuals with IDD

Hey there, Jefferson City! We have some wonderful news bubbling up from the Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council (MODDC). On Thursday, September 12, 2024, they announced an incredible new initiative aimed at empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Starting soon, a free virtual training program called “Missouri Partners in Policymaking” will be available for those who wish to enhance their understanding of advocacy and communication.

What’s the Program All About?

The “Missouri Partners in Policymaking” program is designed specifically to help individuals who have IDD strengthen their communication skills. The goal? So they can engage effectively with legislators, participate in boards, and ultimately influence the policies that affect their communities directly. Isn’t that fantastic?

But here’s the icing on the cake: family members or guardians of minors aged 17 or younger with IDD can also join this amazing program. This opportunity allows them to become better advocates for their loved ones’ needs. It’s a true community effort to ensure everyone has a voice and the tools they need to advocate for necessary changes.

What Can Participants Expect?

The MODDC describes the “Partners in Policymaking” program as a national curriculum that focuses on teaching advocacy skills to create systemic change for individuals with IDD. Participants can expect to connect with legislators and gain the confidence needed to help influence meaningful policies in their communities.

Stacy Morse, the project coordinator for the program, emphasized the importance of empowering individuals with IDD. “The goal is for people with IDD to guide policymakers on laws that affect them,” she stated. That’s a mantra we can all rally behind!

A Graduate’s Story

Before we get into the nitty-gritty details, let’s take a moment to hear from someone who has gone through the program. Marlene G., a recent graduate, shared her transformative experience: “Partners completely changed the way I look at disabilities. My perspective was all negative. The information I acquired in Partners in Policymaking makes me feel confident on the journey to help better my son navigate for help. This program has been a blessing to me and my family.”

How It Works

Those interested in participating must commit to attending all virtual sessions, completing homework assignments, and submitting a final project that focuses on systems change. This commitment is an essential part of the process as it helps participants develop essential skills and knowledge.

With over 500 graduates already making waves in Missouri, many of them serve on the MODD Council, further emphasizing the impact of this program. Participants learn leadership skills and advocacy techniques from both state and national experts, allowing them to work alongside decision-makers to make a positive difference for individuals with disabilities.

Application Deadline Fast Approaching!

For those eager to dive into this enlightening experience, mark your calendars! The deadline to apply for the 2025 Mo. Partners in Policymaking Class is Friday, November 1, 2024. Be sure to get your application in on time!
