Missouri Governor Contemplates Major Decision in Review of Former Police Officer Eric DeValkenaere’s Sentence

Missouri Governor in the Limelight Over Review of Eric DeValkenaere’s Case

Missouri’s Governor faces big decision over former police officer’s case

Mike Parson, Governor of Missouri, described his scrutiny over former Kansas City police officer, Eric DeValkenaere’s sentence as a ‘big decision’. In a telephone interview, Parson’s remarks offered a glimpse into the gravity of the case, which has piqued public interest.

A glimpse into the case

Eric DeValkenaere is currently serving a six-year prison sentence after a guilty verdict of second degree murder in the 2019 shooting of Cameron Lamb. The former police officer’s options now hinge on a possible pardon or commutation by Governor Parson, after an appeal to the Missouri Supreme court was declined earlier this year. DeValkenaere can also either make an appeal to the United States Supreme Court or seek out post-conviction relief in state court, most often sought by citing ineffective support from his counsel.

‘One of the toughest cases’

“That’s one of the toughest cases that’s ever come across my desk,” Parson expressed during Friday morning’s radio show. Facing a rapidly closing term in office, in January next year, he has seven months left to fully review DeValkenaere’s case.

Emphasising the weight of the decision, Parson told, “It’s a big decision — that’s where I’m at.” He also acknowledged the ongoing public curiosity of the case, noting how frequently he hears from people asking about it.

However, Parson remained non-committal on the direction of his decision. “I don’t want to give anyone false hope, ’cause I don’t know what I want to do; I really don’t,” Parson admitted candidly.

Anticipations Run High

With the conclusion of this case holding far-reaching implications, stakeholders and observers alike are keenly observing the unfolding situation. For now, everyone eagerly waits as Governor Parson deliberates his final decision in one of the most high-profile cases of his tenure.
