Kansas City, Mo. – The beloved taco destination, Mission Taco Joint, will be undergoing a significant transformation as it rebrands to Session Taco. This change comes after a lawsuit filed by Gruma Corporation, the parent company of Mission Foods, over trademark infringement issues. Fans of the restaurant can expect a fresh, new vibe as the transition takes place over the coming months.
Adam Tilford, one of the owners, shared the inspiration behind the new name. “We were just beach rats growing up. We moved around a lot with our dad’s work in the Coast Guard, but after living in San Diego three times, we fell in love with the sights, sounds, and the food,” he said. He describes how their experiences—including skating, surfing, and hanging out on the boardwalk—have shaped their culinary adventure. The name Session Taco resonates with their passion for fun and laid-back experiences, aiming to create a welcoming atmosphere for their guests.
As part of the rebranding, the owners are also planning to refresh their menu. According to Jason Tilford, the restaurant will introduce several new items that reflect their coastal influences. Expect to see dishes like Baja Tuna Ceviche and Lobster Tacos, alongside fan favorites such as a classic crunchy taco and a burrito bowl. The owners believe that this change is a perfect opportunity to add new energy to both their menu and their team.
The new identity for Session Taco will not happen overnight. The owners have indicated that they plan to roll out the new branding gradually, with expectations to have everything completed by the end of the year. Kansas City locals can begin to experience the new menu as early as this week, with St. Louis getting in on the action soon after.
The changeover from Mission Taco to Session Taco represents a new chapter for the popular eatery. As the owners embrace their history while welcoming new ideas, fans can look forward to both nostalgia and innovation in their dining experience.
