An intended skydiving trip took a shocking turn when a small plane crash occurred near Kansas City on the 27th of May, 2024. The plane, reported as a single-engine Cessna, was undertaking a skydiving mission when disaster struck. In a miraculous turn of events, all seven individuals on board, including the pilot and six skydivers, survived the crash by parachuting to safety.
Early Saturday afternoon, the plane went down in a field east of the Butler Memorial Airport runways. This location, about 62 miles south of Kansas City, was where emergency services discovered the wreckage. Preliminary information from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicates that the plane was flying a skydiving mission at the time of the crash. The wreckage is described as a “total loss.”
Immediate on-site assistance was provided by paramedics, who treated and released all survivors at the scene. Despite the violent crash, all individuals involved have been confirmed safe and unharmed. The Bates County Sheriff’s Office released this information in a public statement on social media.
In an extraordinary stroke of fortune, all six skydivers and the pilot managed to parachute from the aircraft prior to the crash. The Bates County Sheriff, Chad Anderson, confirmed via email that all passengers parachuted to safety before the pilot also did the same. The pilot was later located at an airport hangar.
The NTSB, alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is currently undertaking a thorough investigation into the crash. As part of the process, the wreckage will be recovered and examined in order to determine what caused the plane to go down. The Bates County Sheriff’s Office has affirmed its support in assisting both the NTSB and the FAA in their ongoing investigations.
No additional details, including the name of the pilot or the origin and planned destination of the flight, have been disclosed at this time.
