Kansas City – On the evening of June 24th, the prestigious Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts came to life and echoed to the familiar rhythm of rock’n’roll. The center played host to the renowned Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, leaving an indelible mark on Kansas City’s musical calendar. This lively concert was in support of their recently-released record, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits.
Mike Campbell, notoriously known for his tenure as the guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, donned the double role of a frontman and guitar maestro for the Dirty Knobs at the event. Campbell and his troupe unleashed a robust set of songs, including evocative pieces from their latest record and some of Campbell’s compositions from his time with Tom Petty.
The power-packed performance of the band charged the environment with palpable electricity, painting vivid pictures for the audience. The crowd roared in harmony as Campbell and the Knobs delivered their setlist, which included some audience favorites such as Don’t Wait Up, Dare to Dream and Fuck That Guy.
Campbell later on treated the fans to renditions of Tom Petty’s Listen to Her Heart, Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough), Don’t Fade on Me, Refugee, A Face in the Crowd, and You Wreck Me. He was joined by Shannon McNally for the cover of You Wreck Me, creating a memorable moment.
A special mention goes to our photographer, Tom Pugh, who painted a thousand words with his photographic artwork capturing the energy, enthusiasm, and emotions from the event. His gallery made it possible to relive the spectacle frame by frame, showcasing the vivaciousness poured into the performance by Campbell and his band.
Mike Campbell has continued to burn bright on the music scene even after parting ways with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. His current endeavor with the Dirty Knobs has already carved a unique identity in the rock music landscape, thanks to their robust and husky melodies coupled with soulful lyrics. Their latest record Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits is a testament to their journey of creating music that resonates with their audience.
Indeed, it was a night to remember as Kansas City resonated with the strums of Mike Campbell and the fervor of the Dirty Knobs. The audience left the venue, humming tunes that would echo in their memories long after the event. As Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs continue their musical journey, Kansas City eagerly awaits their next spectacle.
