Hey there, Kansas City! There’s some thrilling news for our downtown area that’s bound to brighten up the lives of over 100 future residents. Picture this: the historic Midland Lofts on Baltimore Avenue, a beautiful reminder of our city’s past, is set to become home sweet home for many. Built in 1927, this charming building was once a lively hub where performers from the Midland Theater made their grand entrances. However, after standing vacant for years, it’s now getting a fresh start.
Thanks to the dedication of the Cordish Companies, the Midland Lofts are emerging from their dormant state and transitioning into vibrant apartments perfect for city dwellers. The renovation of older buildings like this one is part of a larger trend aimed at revitalizing downtown areas by attracting more people to come live and enjoy all that our fantastic city has to offer.
“We’ve long had a goal of 40,000 residents downtown,” said Jared Campbell, a heartwarming voice for the Downtown Council of Kansas City. As of now, we’re just over 32,000, and the hope is to see this number continue to climb. Every little bit helps, and projects like the Midland Lofts play a crucial role in achieving that goal.
Campbell expressed how vital it is for the city to embrace its historic buildings as part of its legacy. “Renovating places like the Midland Lofts adds to the character of the landscape downtown. Instead of erecting new buildings that all look the same, we are preserving historic architecture,” he stated. Isn’t it wonderful to think about how we can celebrate our past while moving forward?
Another significant factor attracting residents to downtown life is the walkability it offers. Take it from Rye Spillman, the proud owner of Downtown Hair Lounge, across the street from the incoming lofts. “I can just walk to work every day, which is just super nice because parking can get kind of hectic,” she shared. And she’s spot on! Nobody enjoys the hassle of finding a parking spot and then racing against the clock.
For Spillman, more housing means more clients walking through her door. “Most of my clients come from foot traffic, so having people living nearby is fantastic,” she added. Convenience plays a crucial role in our busy lives, and being able to step outside and get a haircut or grab a bite to eat is incredibly appealing to many folks these days.
Overall, the Midland Lofts project aligns with the city’s vision of restoring the area’s historical glory while ensuring it remains a bustling hub of activity. With historic buildings like this being revitalized, it breathes new life into our neighborhoods and invites more and more people to embrace the charm of downtown Kansas City.
So, if you’re a potential resident or just someone who loves what our city offers, keep an eye out for what’s happening at the Midland Lofts and the surrounding area. With renovations giving new life to old gems and a steadily increasing community, our downtown could become the trendy, vibrant space we all adore. Here’s to the bright future ahead for Kansas City!
