In a proactive move to ensure the safety of its residents, leaders in Miami County, Kansas have greenlit the use of necessary funding amounting to more than $30,000 to replace a damaged tornado siren located south of Kansas City Metro.
Issues with the tornado siren near Bucyrus were discovered during regular system checks performed by the local emergency management. The Miami County Undersheriff reported that the siren failed to produce a warning sound during one of these tests last month. A following assessment by a technician identified that a lightning strike had irreparably damaged the electrical components of the siren, necessitating a full replacement of the unit.
In response to the failed siren, the Miami County Commissioners met and agreed upon the funding required for the replacement during a meeting last week. The county clerk later confirmed that a new siren is set to replace the damaged one in the coming weeks.
Until the new siren is fully operational, the sheriff’s office will employ interim measures to ensure the safety of residents in case of inclement weather. If a tornado warning is issued for the area where the siren is located, a deputy will be dispatched. This deputy will be tasked with using the siren on his or her vehicle as a warning signal. As an additional precaution, residents have been advised to sign up for severe weather notifications to be aware of any imminent weather threats.
While the affected residents wait for the siren to be repaired, they are also advised to remain alert during severe weather conditions. Watching online for the latest storm updates, checks, and warnings is encouraged. The resolute action of the county officials not only underscores the commitment to safety but also the proactive steps taken to ensure their community is well-protected.
