Set in a small rural community, the play promises to deliver suspense and drama, drawing from the playwright’s own roots. With performances held at the Westport Bowery, MET invites theater enthusiasts to enjoy an engaging experience filled with secrets and intrigue. Tickets for the show are available until February 2, making this a must-see event for winter entertainment.
In the heart of Kansas City, the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre (MET) is ready to usher in the new year with a sensational bang! The excitement kicks off with the intriguing murder mystery and character study, “Book of Days,” brought to life by the talented Lanford Wilson. Performances are taking place at the cozy and inviting Westport Bowery, making it an ideal spot for theater lovers.
“Book of Days” first came to life in 1998 when it was commissioned by the well-known actor, Jeff Daniels, for his small-town theater company nestled in Michigan. The play invites us into the charming, yet enigmatic world of a rural community in southwestern Missouri, where mysteries unfold amidst familiar small-town dynamics. Wilson, who hails from Lebanon, Missouri, draws from his own roots, generating a sense of authenticity that many will appreciate.
Tickets for this thrilling performance are on sale now and will be available until February 2. So, if you’re looking to spice up your winter with some gripping entertainment, this is one event you won’t want to miss.
The play features a vibrant twelve-person cast, expertly directed by MET’s artistic director, Karen Paisley, alongside actor/director Bob Paisley. This dynamic duo has created a stellar experience that invites the audience into the lives of the characters, often breaking the fourth wall and creating a unique, engaging performance experience.
Set in the fictional town of Dublin, the story starts with a community theater performance of George Bernard Shaw’s classic, “St. Joan.” The characters are introduced gradually, each with their own secrets, adding layers to the narrative. Key figures include Ruth Hoch, the cheese factory’s dutiful bookkeeper; Len, her husband and the factory’s manager; Will Bates, the factory owner; and the ever-watchful Sheriff Conroy Adkins.
Act I primarily lays the groundwork, giving the audience a taste of the quirky dynamics and tensions within this small community. The excitement builds as the act reaches its climax with the shocking, yet accidental death of Will Bates during a hunting excursion.
As Act II unfolds, Ruth begins to suspect that the death of Will might not have been an accident at all. Her journey of discovery will keep you at the edge of your seat, as secrets from the past come bubbling to the surface. The stark reality of rural life combined with Wilson’s hallmark naturalistic dialogue makes this play resonate on many levels.
If you’re seeking an experience reminiscent of beloved American classics like “Our Town” and “Under Milk Wood,” then “Book of Days” is right up your alley!
The excitement doesn’t stop there. Following the curtain drop for “Book of Days,” MET will introduce their next compelling production, “Freud’s Last Session,” set to hit the stage from February 14 to 16—definitely another must-see.
In a week brimming with art and culture, let’s not forget that the talented artists around us are thriving. Recently, the Coterie Theatre received a generous $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, aimed at supporting the world premiere of Laura T. Smith’s new musical inspired by Sonia Sotomayor’s best-selling book, “Just Ask!”.
Additionally, the theatrical world bid farewell to a legend as the Blue Man Group performed their final show in New York City, after an impressive 33 years of captivating audiences off-Broadway.
As we watch these stories unfold, it’s a fantastic time to engage with the arts and perhaps catch a performance or two. With so much going on, the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre’s “Book of Days” is poised to start the year off with a thrilling intrigue that’s sure to please both theater aficionados and casual attendees alike!
