KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On a beautiful Saturday morning, nearly 7,000 participants united at Crown Center for the annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk. This event serves as a celebration for breast cancer survivors and their families, as well as a reminder of the ongoing fight against this prevalent disease. As the crisp fall air filled the bustling atmosphere, attendees donned their pink apparel, ready to make a difference.
This year, the event aims to raise an ambitious $300,000 for the American Cancer Society. Many participants were breast cancer survivors themselves, eager to support research and awareness while inspiring others battling the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, over 300,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, including nearly 6,000 in Missouri and roughly 2,600 in Kansas. With these incredible numbers in mind, the walk was a powerful show of support and unity.
Among the supporters was Dr. Molly Hill, a doctor of diagnostic radiology at the University of Kansas Health System, who shared important updates on breast cancer technologies. “Recent advancements in mammogram imaging have made a significant impact in early detection and treatment,” she explained. This includes the introduction of 3D mammograms being covered by insurance in both Kansas and Missouri, offering patients better imaging options.
Dr. Hill also highlighted the shift towards more personalized treatment. “People now receive detailed reports on their breast density from mammograms, which opens the door to supplemental screenings such as ultrasound or even screening breast MRI,” she mentioned. These innovations are crucial for early detection, which significantly affects survival rates.
Saturday’s event wasn’t just about fundraising and support; it was also a day filled with festivities. Families enjoyed local entertainment, participated in engaging activities, and shared stories with one another. It was a vibrant gathering of conquerors, fighters, and supporters, all coming together for a common cause.
The goal of raising $300,000 is not one taken lightly. The American Cancer Society has pledged to match donations, potentially bringing the total to a substantial $600,000 for continued research and support for patients and survivors. “Every little bit helps,” stated an enthusiastic participant. “We all know someone affected by this disease, so it feels great to be part of something larger.”
Want to join the fight against breast cancer? There’s still time to contribute! Donations can be made through the American Cancer Society’s website, helping improve the lives of thousands impacted by breast cancer each year. Collective efforts make a difference, and every dollar counts.
As the sun rose high on this inspiring day, Kansas City showed that together, they can make strides not just against breast cancer, but in supporting one another through love, community, and awareness. Every step taken is a step closer to a world where no one faces cancer alone.
