Kansas City is waking up to a rather soggy morning! A large swath of rain is making its way from the south-southwest to the north-northeast, drenching the metro area. If you’re planning to step outside today, you might want to grab that umbrella because the rain isn’t planning to leave us anytime soon.
As we dive into this dreary day, the rain is expected to continue through lunchtime, with heavier showers winding down in Kansas City and heading westward. For those in the eastern and northern parts of the city, don’t expect it to dry up just yet—remnant showers will likely stick around into the afternoon, creating a less-than-pleasant day overall.
Temperature-wise, we’re not getting much relief either, with highs struggling to reach the mid-50s. For those who were hoping for some sunshine to cheer things up, keep your fingers crossed—it looks like the sky may only clear up toward nightfall.
Despite the gloom today, there is a silver lining! Starting from tomorrow, the weather should take a turn for the better. We’re looking at sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, with highs creeping up to the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. And if that’s not enough good news, Friday promises to be even nicer, featuring highs in the mid-60s. Sounds like a great weekend is on the horizon!
Now, here’s some compelling news: today’s rain might just be the final nail in the coffin of the drought that has been plaguing our area. Although the drought report is usually slow to reflect the rapid changes in rainfall, it’s clear that from September 1 to October 20, we faced a notably dry spell, ranking as the 10th driest on record. However, since November kicked off, we’ve surged to be in the top 10 wettest! Rain totals have already reached approximately 2.64 inches, and with today’s additional rainfall, we expect to climb even higher. So, yes, the drought may finally be a thing of the past!
If you’re looking ahead, keep an eye on this weekend. After a lovely Friday, clouds will start to creep back in Saturday night. While not everyone may see rain, there’s a slight chance of light showers, particularly from the metro area northward into Sunday morning. The good news? Any anticipated rain would likely be very light.
A noteworthy weather system is heading our way early next week that could bring bigger moisture. Starting Sunday night, there’s potential for rain to sweep across the south up into the Plains by Monday. This next wave could bring around half an inch to an inch of rain to our area, depending on how closely it moves towards us.
Shifting gears to the tropics, we have Hurricane Sara making headlines. This is a rare occurrence for mid-November! Although it’s still early to predict its exact path, it’s definitely something to monitor, especially for anyone with plans to head to Cancun and Cozumel in the next few days. Strong weather systems could impact their travel plans.
Lastly, you might enjoy seeing the lunar halo that appeared recently! This beautiful optical illusion is created by ice crystals in the atmosphere refracting the moonlight, leaving behind a stunning glowing ring around the moon. It’s a reminder that while today may be grey and rainy, the wonders of nature are all around us.
So, Kansas City, while we’re embracing a wet day today, brighter skies are just around the corner! Stay tuned for more weather updates as we navigate through November!
