KC Streetcar Boosting Business Activity

Kansas City Enjoys Increased Business Activity Courtesy of KC Streetcar

In a delightful surprise, the KC Streetcar construction, which expanded its route down Main Street to the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Brookside, appears to have stimulated increased commercial activity in the area, bringing in a wave of renewed energy and economic vibrancy to the locale.

A Welcome Boost for a Century-old Shop

Michael’s Fine Clothing, a century-old sartorial establishment located at the corner of Main and 19th Street, has been witnessing a noticeable upturn in business since the streetcar became operational. The traditionally upscale clothing shop, once catering primarily to an older demographic, has seen a significant surge in its younger clientele.

Shop owner, Keith Novorr, who had initially expressed concern over the possible detrimental impact of the construction disruption on his business, has since been pleasantly proved wrong. He’s noticed not only increased foot traffic but also a positive shift in his sales figures since the streetcar came in.

Strengthening the Local Economy and Business Diversity

The extension of the KC Streetcar route has had a more extensive ripple effect on the area’s economy than initially anticipated. Novorr found himself expanding his product range to cater to his new, younger clientele, incorporating trendier colors and fits into his collection. The influx of young customers, primarily downtown residents, has also boosted the local economy and increased diversity in terms of both products and services.

Construction Fatigue Gives Way to Optimistic Anticipation

Despite the sound and fury of ongoing construction closer to the Country Club Plaza, businesses in that area are optimistically awaiting the same benefits experienced by their downtown counterparts. Laura Norris, owner of Ragazza, a restaurant along the route, anticipates a significant rise in business once the streetcar extension becomes functional in 2025. The convenience offered by the streetcar is expected to attract a wider range of customers from various parts of the city by providing efficient, relaxed, and reliable means of transportation.

A Testament to Resilience and Adaptability

The KC Streetcar has indeed proven to be a beacon of hope and a classic case of resilience and adaptability for local businesses. Though initially seen as a potential disruptor in terms of construction noise and inconvenience, this public transportation initiative has brought with it increased pedestrian traffic, rejuvenation of business areas, and overall economic growth. For businesses like Michael’s Fine Clothing, the KC Streetcar has breathed new life into their customer base, creating an atmosphere of renewed optimism and excitement for the future.
