KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The annual Fourth of July celebration typically leaves shelters overrun with lost and scared pets spooked by the festivities. Area shelters are pleading with residents to lend a helping hand as they reach critical capacities. KC Pet Project, for instance, is one organization urging the community to try and find pet owners themselves before bringing animals to the already overflowing shelters.
By Saturday, July 6, the shelter had already taken in 69 new animals, many likely escaped during the firework displays common with the Fourth of July holiday. The organization notes that the days following this national holiday are among the busiest of the year.
KC Pet Project has highlighted that most pets are found within a quarter mile of their homes. Therefore, if residents encounter a lost animal, it is advisable that they first check for a form of identification. If they find any, they should inform their neighbors and check if the pet has a microchip. This small act holds significant potential in reducing the strain on already overloaded shelters while reuniting pets with their owners.
According to KC Pet Project, not only is the shelter currently at max capacity, but it has also been struggling with large numbers of animals throughout the year. Therefore, returning lost pets to their owners instead of bringing them to the shelters could be critical in preserving the lives of these animals.
With the shelters reaching their critical capacities, the project is guiding residents through specific steps to help lost pets regain their homes. Detailed information can be found on the KC Pet Project website. The public’s assistance in this matter is crucial and much appreciated – they can play a significant role in resolving this pressing issue and saving animal lives.
While the situation seems overwhelming, every effort made could make an enormous difference. By being proactive in scanning for identification or microchips on found animals, reaching out to neighbors, and making the effort to reunite pets with their owners, Kansas City residents have the opportunity to ease the burden on shelters and ensure a safe return for the beloved pets.
