Kansas City Bids Farewell to Beloved KC Daiquiri Shop Ahead of December Closure

Kansas City Says Goodbye to KC Daiquiri Shop

In a heartfelt announcement that has many locals feeling a bit blue, KC Daiquiri Shop has declared that it will be closing its doors for good on December 1st. Located at 1116 Grand Blvd., this beloved Cajun and Creole restaurant has been a staple in the Kansas City dining scene since it opened its doors back in 2019.

A Tough Decision

The news came via the restaurant’s social media pages, where they shared their challenges with fans and followers. The enthusiastic message expressed sadness over the closing but also gratitude for the memories created over the years. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of our beloved KC Daiquiri Shop on Dec 1st,” the message read, noting the myriad difficulties the restaurant has faced, including a “slow economy“, issues with local and state government, and “ongoing legal battles” with neighboring businesses that were not supportive.

A Community’s Reaction

The response from the community has been overwhelming. Supportive messages flooded the restaurant’s social media, as fans expressed their sadness. One individual wrote, “Such a sad day in KC,” while another chimed in, “NOOO!!! I am so sad. Sending Love.” Clearly, KC Daiquiri Shop was not just a restaurant—it was a cherished part of the Kansas City community.

More Than Just a Restaurant

Owners Kinley Strickland and Calvin Vick have built more than just a restaurant; they created a place where people could enjoy delicious food like wings, po’boys, deep-fried chicken, and their famous frozen daiquiris. They also served traditional dishes such as gumbo, bringing a taste of Cajun culture to the area.

In 2021, the duo broadened their horizons by launching the KC Daiquiri Shop Bistreaux in Overland Park at 8725 Metcalf Ave.. This location was designed to offer even more Cajun items to a community eager for diverse culinary experiences. However, that location also faced challenges and was ultimately closed, making way for a Mexican restaurant called Don Chuy’s Fresh Mex and Cantina.

Looking Ahead

Even in the face of closure, Strickland shared thoughts about the future with optimism, stating, “We will carry the spirit of the DaqShop and the connections we’ve made into whatever comes next.” He presented a forward-looking perspective, encouraging fans to “keep an eye out for what lies ahead.”

While it’s unclear what the next chapter holds, it is clear that KC Daiquiri Shop left a mark on those who visited. Through shared food, laughter, and community vibes, it will undoubtedly be missed by many.

A Local Legacy

KC Daiquiri Shop was among the few Black-owned restaurants in Kansas City, contributing to the rich diversity of the city’s culinary landscape. The end of its story might be bittersweet, but the memories are sure to live on in the hearts and taste buds of many.

As we bid farewell to this cherished establishment, it’s important to celebrate the joy, flavor, and community spirit that KC Daiquiri Shop brought to Kansas City. The mouthwatering dishes and unforgettable daiquiris will surely be missed. Here’s to hoping for exciting new adventures for the owners and something equally delightful to take its place!
