Kansas City – The renowned Kansas rancher and businessman, Bill Haw Sr., who also played a significant role in revitalizing Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms neighborhood, died at the age of 85 last week, leaving behind a legacy that has marked an indelible impact on both rural and urban Kansas.

Bill Haw Sr.’s Impact on Flint Hills

Bill Haw Sr., an innovative thinker who ventured beyond traditional boundaries to pioneer distinct methods of cattle management and land conservation, was particularly esteemed for his influential work in Kansas’ Flint Hills. Prior to selling his two ranches in the Flint Hills in 2021, Haw demonstrated his committed dedication to environmental sustainability by establishing perpetual easements with the Nature Conservancy. This move ensured the preservation and protection of his 14,000 acres of prime grassland for future generations.

Reviving the Historic West Bottoms

In 1991, Haw became the owner of the Livestock Exchange Building in the crumbling West Bottoms neighborhood. Despite the district’s then dilapidated state, Haw envisioned a flourishing neighborhood that could transform into a welcoming, accessible, and secure environment for both residents and businesses. His impact has significantly contributed to reinvigorating the West Bottoms into a thriving locality.

Legacy Left Behind

“I hope (my dad) is remembered for his achievements, that’s really going to be his legacy that’s identifiable without knowing much about him,” expressed Bill Haw Jr., the son of Bill Haw Sr. “And, I guess I hope he’s also remembered for just the way he dealt with people. His sense of fairness, and just the way he did business and did friendships.”

Beyond his tangible accomplishments in the Flint Hills and the West Bottoms, Haw Sr.’s legacy also reverberates through the values he upheld and the relationships he fostered. He was a respected figure in the Kansas City area, known for his integrity in business dealings and his genuine camaraderie.

The life and work of Bill Haw Sr. are testament to his contribution to the Kansas City community and the protection of its natural and historical landscapes. His enduring impact on the region signifies a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
