Case Advances Against Mother Accused in Appalling Crime
In a chilling incident that shocked the community, a woman from Kansas City—who is accused of decapitating her son and the family pet—will face trial following her recent assessment as mentally fit for the process.
Arrest and Initial Proceedings
The accused, Tasha Haefs, has been at the center of a tormenting case rounding back to the horrific events of 2022, when she allegedly decapitated her 6-year-old son, Karvel Stevens. A warrant was issued for her arrest in February 2022, and she subsequently faced charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Upon receiving a welfare check request at Haefs’ residence, local law enforcement discovered a terrifying scene. Trails of blood led up to her front door while eerie singing could be audibly traced from inside the house. Police officers reported seeing a part of a child’s body through a window of the home, which prompted a forceful entry into the property. Upon entry, officers found Haefs with blood-stained legs and feet, the remains of her son and a decapitated dog in the basement.
Accused Declared Competent for Trial
Court proceedings provided alarming revelations as Haefs openly confessed to the murders. She disclosed her struggles with drug addiction, depression, severe trauma, and hallucinatory experiences to detectives. However, despite her confession, the initial proceedings in June 2022 deemed Haefs mentally unfit to stand trial, subsequently putting the case on hold.
Recently, developments in the case took a significant turn. Court records from the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson County indicate that on the 19th of April, Judge Jerri Zhang rendered a verdict recognizing Haefs’ competency to stand trial. This decision has marked the continuance of the case, giving the state permission to present the gathered evidence to a grand jury. The arraignment is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday, April 29, at the circuit court.
A Harrowing Incident Remains
The harrowing incident caused waves of shock and sadness in the community. While the case advances and the trial is set to start after the recent declaration of Haefs’ competency, an air of sombreness wraps the local community of Kansas City, who were deeply affected by the gruesome crime.
