Icy street in Kansas City during winter storm

A state of emergency has been declared as meteorologists warn of further severe weather conditions. As communities deal with the impacts, warming centers have been established to assist those affected by the harsh cold and power outages.

Widespread Travel Disruptions Hit Kansas City: What You Need to Know

This weekend, Kansas City residents found themselves grappling with some serious winter woes as a winter storm swept through the area. Conditions began to worsen on Saturday afternoon, with freezing rain creating a slick and dangerous landscape for drivers across the city.

Crashes, Crashes, and More Crashes

As the precipitation fell, reports of accidents flooded in. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) wasn’t exempt from the chaos either, as one of their snowplows lost control and overturned in Platte County, spilling materials intended for road treatment. Just imagine that—it’s a snowplow, the very vehicle meant to help us, getting caught up in the mess!

Warning Signs from the Highway Patrol

The Highway Patrol wasted no time in advising folks that road conditions throughout Troop A were quickly becoming treacherous. With MODOT crews working tirelessly around the clock to tackle icy roadways, many drivers experienced major struggles just trying to get around. One particular instance involved a Mustang slowly spinning its wheels, desperate to gain traction on an icy stretch in South Kansas City.

Stay Indoors, Folks!

In light of the perilous driving conditions, officials have recommended staying at home until at least early Monday morning for everyone’s safety. It’s better to be warm and cozy inside than risking your neck on those treacherous roads.

Airport Chaos: Affected Flights

Heavy Snow Ahead

This winter storm isn’t just a Kansas City issue. Central Kansas to Indiana is bracing for widespread snow—a whopping 14 inches in some areas along and north of Interstate 70. In fact, a portion of I-70 had to be closed in central Kansas due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions. Residents can expect that weather system to push eastward, bringing winter’s chill all the way to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic states soon.

Meteorologists Eye Severe Weather

But it doesn’t stop there. Meteorologists are predicting a hard freeze the likes of which hasn’t been seen in Florida, while severe thunderstorms potentially brewing in the Lower Mississippi Valley could include threats of tornados and hail. It’s almost like Mother Nature is feeling particularly feisty this season!

Emergency Services in High Demand

Reports from the MODOT showed over 130 crashes occurring between 1 PM and 9 PM on Saturday alone, with emergency services responding to over 328 calls during that time. Roads such as Interstates 35 and 69 were particularly problematic, leading to numerous road closures and stranded drivers, many of whom were left waiting for assistance.

State of Emergency Declared

In response to the chaos, Governor Laura Kelly of Kansas declared a state of disaster emergency. Whiteout conditions have posed a significant risk of residents becoming stranded, further escalating the need to heed emergency services who warned that response times may be delayed due to icy roads.

What’s Next?

A blizzard warning is still in effect for the Kansas City area until early Monday morning. City officials reported that 1,500 snow trucks were sent out to clear roads with crews working in 12-hour shifts. Additionally, there were widespread power outages, especially south of the city, with warming centers popping up in local churches and libraries to help those in need.

School Closures Looming

As for students, schools in the Independence, Missouri area are hinting at potential closures, and it’s no wonder considering how crazy the weather has been!

The icy blast expected to hit much of the eastern United States starting on Monday brings with it dangerously cold temperatures. Let’s hope the storm subsides quickly and everyone stays safe and sound at home!
