News Summary

As February comes to a close, Kansas City is experiencing unseasonably warm weather, lifting spirits as the winter season wraps up. This winter has been one of the coldest on record but is now showing a warmer trend. With temperatures rising into the 60s and even nearing 70°F, residents are encouraged to enjoy the pleasant days ahead. However, a cool front is expected soon, reminding everyone that winter isn’t entirely over yet. The region anticipates potential thunderstorms as March approaches, providing a mix of weather as spring unfolds in Kansas City.

Kansas City Enjoys Unseasonably Warm Weather as Meteorological Winter Ends

As February bids farewell, Kansas City is feeling a delightful surge in warmth that has locals buzzing with excitement. Rather than the usual wintry chill that sees the region gripped in icy temperatures, we’re experiencing a pleasant weather boost that many are grateful for!

A Slightly Warmer Winter

This year’s meteorological winter—a period stretching from December 1 through February 28—has historically ranked as one of the coldest. Remarkably, as of now, it’s sitting comfortably as the 20th coldest winter on record. That’s a notable jump from its place as the 15th coldest, indicating a shift in our chilly fortunes just as we reach the end of February.

What’s the Weather Like Today?

If you step outside in Kansas City today, you’ll notice mostly sunny skies paired with a warm embrace of temperatures rising into the lower 60s. That’s certainly something to smile about! Although you might want to hold onto your hats, as winds are set to be a tad blustery, gusting up to 25 MPH at times. Tonight, temperatures will cool off, landing in the mid-30s—fair and cool, yet quite pleasant compared to many days in this winter.

Heck, Temperatures are Rising!

As we look to the end of the week, temperatures are projected to climb even higher, with some areas even flirting with the idea of hitting nearly 70°F on Friday! Those living south and west of the metro area should definitely prepare for some patio time or a leisurely stroll in the unseasonable warmth.

What’s Coming Up?

However, don’t put away those sweaters just yet! A cool front is expected to bring air that draws temperatures back toward the average as we head into the weekend. But the cool down won’t be extreme, ensuring that despite the return of chillier air, we’ll still enjoy some lovely days before March fully settles in.

Mixing It Up

A Historical Perspective

It might be good to put things in perspective. This winter has not only been one of the coldest in recent years but also one of the snowiest in the last quarter-century, ranking amongst the top 35 snowiest seasons. Just this season alone, Kansas City saw an impressive 20.5 inches of snow, which exceeds the average annual snowfall of 18.2 inches—a notable feat!

Looking Forward

With the arrival of meteorological spring on Saturday, March 1, we may find that spring’s warm embrace is just around the corner—although the spring equinox will officially occur a few weeks later, on March 20. Generally, the last snowfall in this region falls around March 22, but let’s not forget the record May 3, 1907 snowfall that caught everyone by surprise!

Interestingly, the average last snowfall date has begun shifting towards March 15 since 2000. So, even though winter is putting on its farewell parade, don’t count on being completely free from snow just yet!

In short, embrace the lovely warm days ahead, relish in the fact that spring is knocking on our doors, and keep an eye on what Mother Nature has in store over the next few weeks. Here’s to sunny days ahead in Kansas City!
