Severe Thunderstorms and Tornadoes Rattle Missouri and Kansas City!
Good morning, Kansas City! It’s been quite an eventful night with severe thunderstorms rolling through the area, leaving many of us a bit shaken and definitely soaked. The city experienced two waves of strong storms early Wednesday, causing some serious weather excitement that not everyone anticipates!
Rainfall Totals Are In!
If you’ve stepped outside, you might have noted the heavy rainfall that accompanied the storms. Reports indicate that various parts of the metro area received anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain, which is quite the drenching if you ask us! Kansas City International Airport recorded just over an inch of rain from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday, while Wheeler Downtown Airport clocked in at an impressive 1.41 inches. Meanwhile, Executive Airport in Olathe measured 0.62 inches, and New Century AirCenter wasn’t far behind with 0.67 inches. For those in Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport, you might have felt a bit left out with 0.61 inches—still, every drop counts!
The Northland Gets a Little Extra
Interestingly enough, Kansas City’s Northland saw the higher end of the rainfall totals, boasting between 1 to 1 1/2 inches as well. Southern Overland Park and parts of southeast Kansas City also reported about an inch of rain, making for a rather soggy start to the day.
Brace Yourself for Thunder and Tornadoes
The thunderstorms weren’t just about rain. No, no—Mother Nature had other plans involving damaging winds, large hail, and yes, even tornadoes. The National Weather Service confirmed that, around 8:34 a.m., a powerful tornado touched down in Cooper County, Missouri, boasting peak winds of about 115 mph, which classifies it as an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This twirling monster traveled approximately 6.3 miles, affecting Pilot Grove and its neighboring areas.
But wait, there’s more! Another tornado—this time classified as EF-1—was confirmed in Vernon County, Nevada, Missouri, around 7:40 a.m. Not too far behind, an EF-0 tornado made its entrance in Pleasant Hill, Bates County, at around 7:02 a.m. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported from these storms, which is always a silver lining in such wild weather events.
Kansas City on Alert
This chaotic weather prompted a KMBC Alert Day for Tuesday night due to the swirling storms predicted for the area. Timing was key as storm conditions were forecast to develop between 10 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday. Once the clock struck midnight, the storms weren’t shy about making their presence known with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. They made their way through Kansas City by early Wednesday morning, and just as quickly as they arrived, they began to weaken by mid-morning.
A Sigh of Relief
With the storms moving on, drier conditions are expected to settle in for the rest of the day. If you’re out and about, take a moment to appreciate the calmer weather—it’s a nice change after the wild roller-coaster we’ve all been on!
So, let’s keep our eyes on the sky and ensure we’re prepared for whatever weather may come our way next. Whether it’s pouring rain or a sudden gust of wind, being weather-ready is always the best policy!
