Hey there, Kansas City! If you’re planning to hit the road today, you might want to think twice. The weather gods have decided to shower us with some serious snow and sleet, turning our highways into slushy messes. It’s a real winter wonderland out there, and not in a good way!

Heavy Snowfall Warning Issued

First off, there’s a heavy snowfall warning that’s impacting multiple major routes around the city. Here’s what we know:

Southbound I-29/I-35 is facing delays all the way from the I-29 & I-35 Junction (North) to East Front Street, measuring around 3.53 miles. So avoid this route if possible!
If you’re heading west on I-35, be warned that conditions are tricky from the Southwest Trafficway/Exit 1A (SB) to 95th Street/Exit 224. That stretch is about 14.18 miles long and has seen better days.
Northbound I-29 is also bogged down from I-35 to Barry Road/Exit 8, a distance of 8.35 miles. Traffic is backed up, folks!
And let’s not forget about southbound I-35 between exit 2A to exit 2W, which is a short 2.58 miles but still affected.
Northbound I-35 is jammed up from I-29/US-71/Exit 8 to MO-116/Exit 44, spanning 30.43 miles.
Lastly, southbound I-35 in Lathrop is experiencing difficulties from MO-116/Exit 44 to I-29/US-71/Exit 8—another 30.73 miles to add to your detour list.

Driving Conditions Are Not Ideal

Making matters worse, traffic alerts are flying in for sleet and slippery roads. Here are a few more no-gos:

Westbound I-35 in Olathe between Lone Elm Road and Gardner Road/Exit 207 is looking hazardous for about 2.50 miles.
Eastbound I-35 in Gardner from Gardner Road/Exit 207 to Old K-56/Exit 217 spans 7.33 miles and just isn’t safe.
Also, westbound US-50 in Lenexa from exit 83 to I-35 South is a brief stretch of just 0.80 miles but has been tricky.

Accidents Galore

As you’d expect with these conditions, accidents are popping up all over. Here are some of the worst areas:

I-70 in Kansas City is seeing delays after a car flipped over near 78th Street. Emergency services are already on the scene as of 6:30 a.m..
Southbound I-435 between Bannister Road/Exit 70 and US-71/Exit 71 is also encountering a hiccup in traffic—as much as 500 feet of congestion!
And don’t forget about northbound I-29 from I-35 to I-435/Exit 14, which is not the best place to be right now.

Road Closures Are in Full Effect

Due to the weather conditions, several roads and bridges have closed. Here’s the scoop:

I-435 is currently shut down between exit 52B and I-35 South. Meanwhile, I-70 in Tonganoxie is closed as well.
Missouri 152 from NE Barry Road to I-435 North is another one to avoid.
If you’re thinking about traveling down East Truman Road, it’s closed between I-70 East and East 18th Street.
