Kansas City Braces for Important Voter Registration Deadlines
Hey Kansas City! If you’ve got your sights set on having a say in the upcoming elections, it’s time to pay attention! As we gear up for the November 5 general election, there are some important deadlines coming your way for voter registration in both Missouri and Kansas.
Mark Your Calendars!
First things first: if you’re a Kansan, you’ll need to get your voter registration sorted out by Tuesday, October 15. If you’re a Missourian, the deadline is a week earlier, on Wednesday, October 9. So, don’t wait until the last minute; make sure you’re all set to make your voice heard!
National Voter Registration Day
Tomorrow, September 17, is National Voter Registration Day, and there are some great opportunities for you to get registered. For all you UMKC students out there, get excited! Student organizations and BLAQUE KC are hosting a registration drive on campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. So, swing by and make sure your voice is ready for the polls.
Registration Drives Across the City
But wait, there’s more! The League of Women Voters of Kansas City is also putting on a registration drive on the same day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. You can find them at Penn Valley College’s campus center, as well as locations at Longview Community College, 31st and Prospect, and 39th and Troost. There’s no excuse not to get registered!
Even if you can’t make it out during the day, Jackson County is hosting an evening registration opportunity. From 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., head over to the Morning Star Community Center for a chance to get your registration squared away.
How to Register in Kansas
If you’re a resident of Kansas, you can register online, but you’ll need a valid Kansas driver’s license or a non-driver’s ID card. No ID? Not a problem! You can still register using a paper application. You can also register in person at your county election office, the Secretary of State’s Office, or your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
Once you submit your application, keep an eye out for a notification from your local county election office. Remember, if you’ve changed your name, address, or party affiliation, you need to re-register. Double-check your voter registration status online if you’re unsure whether everything’s up-to-date!
Missouri Voter Registration Requirements
For those living in Missouri, it’s a little different. You need to be at least 17 and a half years old to register, but don’t forget—you must be 18 years old by election day to cast your vote! Make sure you’re a U.S. citizen and a resident of Missouri. You can register online by filling out the Missouri Voter Registration Application or even request mail-in registration forms online.
If you’ve moved to a new address within the same county, you can update your address right at your polling place on election day. But if you moved to a new county, you’ll have to fill out a whole new voter registration form. Just a heads up, if you happen to move after the registration deadline, you’ll get a limited ballot featuring only federal and statewide candidates.
