As we gear up for the highly anticipated 2024 Election Day, Kansas City is making sure that everyone can cast their vote, even if they don’t have their own wheels. With the weight of democracy on our shoulders, getting to the polls shouldn’t be a hassle, and Kansas City, along with KCATA, is rolling out the red carpet for voters with some super exciting transportation options through the ‘Vote Your Voice’ initiative.
Cindy Baker, a spokesperson for KCATA, emphasizes the importance of making voting accessible for everyone. She stated, “We don’t want transportation to be a barrier to people accessing the polls.” And they’re doing something about it! Whether you’re a seasoned voter or participating in your first election, rest assured, Kansas City has your back.
Most polling sites in Kansas City, Missouri are conveniently located along existing bus routes. While that sounds good, it’s important for voters to plan out their routes in advance. An easy way to navigate the transit system is by downloading the ‘Transit’ app. This nifty app provides real-time information and trip planning, making your journey to the polls smoother than ever!
If you’re using IRIS, the transportation service provided by KCATA, you’re in for a treat. This service runs free rides to and from polling locations, starting 30 minutes before polling places open and continuing until 30 minutes after they close. Just remember to search for ‘POLLING’ in the IRIS app to snag your free ride.
The service operates for a remarkable 14 hours, ensuring that you can get to the polls at your convenience. And to accommodate every single voter who might need a lift, they’re adding 10 additional vehicles to their fleet, including four larger ones designed for groups. Baker reassures, “They have already downloaded all of the election sites, all the polling places, so their wizz bang technology will know exactly where you’re going and make sure you’re not charged for that trip.”
Feeling adventurous? You can also hop on a bike! The bike code will be good for all RideKC Bike systems across the region. Just grab the RideKC Bike app to see the code and instructions pop up on November 4. The code will offer you two free rides lasting up to 60 minutes each on November 5. Just use the promo code: ‘ROCKTHEVOTE2024’ to take advantage!
If you prefer to travel with a little more comfort, rideshare options are also offering discounts on election day. Uber and Lyft have joined the movement too! You can snag a discount on your ride with just a few clicks, making it even easier to get to your polling place.
KCATA is dedicated to creating a seamless experience for all voters. As Baker puts it, “KCATA’s mission is to connect people to opportunities, and that includes the right to vote.” So it seems they’re leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to make sure everyone has a transportation plan come Election Day.
As the excitement for the 2024 elections builds momentum, Kansas City is working hard to ensure that transportation won’t stand in the way of your voice being heard. With these fantastic options available, all you need to do is mark your calendar, make your plan, and get ready to rock the vote!
