New Trash Drop-Off Date Announced In South Kansas City

Kansas City, Mo: The residents of Kansas City, south of the state line, can now conveniently get rid of unwanted items through a community trash drop-off initiative, as announced recently. The event is scheduled to take place in the Ruskin High School’s east parking lot, located at 7000 E. 111th St., between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday, June 29.

The free-of-charge disposal service is accommodating a wide array of items including old furniture, trash, leaves, brush, tires on or off the rims, and even household hazardous waste. This latter category includes but not limited to, automotive products such as antifreeze and used oil, batteries, household cleaning items, lawn and garden substances like pesticides and herbicides, and paint.

Supervision and Sponsorship

The KCMO Public Works Department is in charge of conducting the drop-off, with the 5th District City Councilmembers Darrell Curls and Mayor Pro Tem, Ryana Parks-Shaw, sponsoring the event. This effort is akin to a make-up day after the truck earmarked for collecting household hazardous waste at Ruskin High School in the 5th District spring cleanup erroneously ended up elsewhere due to a miscommunication. The communication glitch, however, did not deter the execution of other waste collection efforts as planned.

Although the previous event ran smoothly otherwise, approximately 250 vehicles managed to drop-off their trash successfully. There’s another opportunity in sight for the residents to drop-off hazardous waste, exclusively though. Ruskin High School will be hosting another collection event for this type of waste on Saturday, July 27, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Community’s Part

These community-based initiatives aim to maintain cleanliness across the city while providing a convenient solution for residents to dispose of their unwanted items responsibly. By participating in these events, Kansas City residents can contribute significantly to keeping the environment clean and safe for all.

Future Plans

The organization and the city council continue to brainstorm and plan further cleanup drives, focusing on managing waste effectively and boosting city cleanliness and beautification. Their key objective is to promote the concept of maintaining cleanliness as a collective responsibility. The Public Works department, in coordination with the local authorities, continues to work diligently towards hosting more such events that benefit the community and the city environment.
