Kansas City: Trash Carts Available This Spring
On Feb. 1, 2024, the KCMO City Council passed the ordinance (#240093) for the allocation of funds to distribute trash carts to eligible households in Kansas City that receive trash collection services. Plans are underway to procure the necessary equipment and establish a deployment schedule.
Pilot Program Progress
Currently, a pilot program is in place with 12,000 residences in twelve Kansas City neighborhoods receiving new trash carts. This initiative comes on the heels of the successful rollout of rolling recycling bins to qualified residents last year.
Feedback from Residents
Resident Kate Barsotti from Columbus Park shared her experience with the new trash carts, noting that while they are convenient in preventing animal-related messes, there have been some challenges with alley pickup and cart aesthetics.
Efficiency and Effectiveness
The new automated trash collection system is set to replace the current semi-automated method, with the aim of increasing efficiency and reducing illegal dumping. Each trash bin is designed to hold up to 240 pounds of trash, with separate bins for trash and recycling. Lids must be closed during collection cycles.
Deployment Schedule
The city plans to deploy trash carts to all neighborhoods starting in May 2024, with completion expected by October 2024. The new system is projected to improve service delivery, reduce employee injuries, and enhance overall waste management capabilities in Kansas City.
